Kevin and Mirth get into a pitched battle with a group of Red Caps at the police station, while Sean looks on. They win the day and after some investigation, Mirth figures out that Sean is a ghost, explaining why he slipped into a faerie realm. Mirth convinces Sean to join their fight, mostly by holding up Kevin as an example of what happens when you don't believe in the cause, and the trio head out for Edsel's house.
This issue features the first in a series of back-up stories about Grendel titled Devil by the Deed, featuring Hunter Rose as Grendel. These are the first full Grendel stories since the early black and white series was aborted in mid-run. They are told by Christine Spar long after Rose dies, and are based on Rose's journals. This chapter tells of his origins as a prodigy, of his early fame as a novelist, and of his rise as a crime lord. A man named Barry Palumbo tries to double-cross him and the mysterious agent of the police, Argent the wolf. One of the two poisons Palumbo. Grendel finds Palumbo's niece, whom he (like Argent) previously befriended, and takes her away with him.
