Zakarin worked as an inker for Timely, Trojan, and several other publishers during the late 1940s and into the 1950s. He is perhaps best known for soliciting John Romita to be a ghost penciller for him, a partnership which continued for about two years, and which was responsible for launching Romita into mainstream comics. He left the comic industry in the mid 1950s and became an engineer, though continued cartooning for pleasure. In about 1988 he created the character of Inspector Sammy Terry, a character who was briefly featured by Archie in a PSA giveaway.
Very little is known about Lester Zakarin. He was born c. 1929, and attended high school at Manhattan's School of Industrial Art, graduating in or around 1947; this is where he met Romita. He and his wife Iris lived in Yonkers, and he was the village engineer in Mamaroneck for most of his life. He is buried in Mount Ararat Cemetery in New York.
