Legion of Super-Heroes #0
THE GOOD:
Scott Kolins is on the book for a few issues and there is some good things about his art. The way he draws the technology really does come off as 31st century gear. More on his art later. The story deals with Braniac's tech being activated on Colu and the Legion being called in to help. This issue Paul Levitz, really manages to make the characters feel young and that they are in easier times. Ultra Boy is interesting in this issue because he is still struggling to change powers. This issue shows a little bit of Coluian culture and how they get new members and what happens to the original Brainiac. We also learn a little bit about Brainiac 5 and what he was doing before the Legion. This also brings up some interesting questions that we should see answered in future issues of Legion of Super-Heroes.
THE BAD:
An artist has his own style and hating on it doesn't work. However, Scott Kolins style looks sloppy and not fully though of when he draws. Phantom Girl looks off the entire issues. This deepens when you think that he is going to be on the Legion for a while. There are just so many flaws with his body structure that it really gets to me. This issue also doesn't focus too much on Brainiac 5 at all. Legion Lost did a really good job at making a character much more interesting and this issues just does stuff that we saw in Legion: Secret Origin. The story also was wrapped up too easily and it makes the whole thing that you read before seem almost pointless.
THE VERDICT: 3/5 (Okay)
I'm a huge fan of the Legion of Super-Heroes and I'm telling you to stay away from this issue. While there are good ideas here, there isn't enough time to tell them and therefore you are unsatisfied with the final result. If you want to get into the Legion of Super-Heroes there really hasn't been a good spot this series or the last one so if you want start with Superman and the Legion of Super-Heroes and then if you like it, continue reading from there. This was a huge miss for an idea that could have been much more productive and added a little to the characters.
