Let's Do the Time Warp Again and Again and Again
Legion Lost gives me no doubt as to which stake I had in this fire, Legion Lost. Teen Titans and Superboy were BOTH series I let myself fall behind on when temporary budget cuts had to be made, but this crossover forced me to reconsider, since Legion Lost seemed to be the outsider, and I didn't want to get lost. Yet the planned in made incredibly clear, elements of Legion Lost are surprisingly pivotal to this event.
And while I still have my linger concerns over the writing for the two otherwise solid series, Legion Lost never makes me think twice about why I keep it on my list. There's significantly less blatant exposition, all of it comes from Harvest, and it kind of makes sense considering his personality and what we know of his motives. The story is much less crowded, and far more streamlined. The action is great, the artwork doesn't have any personal taste problems to me, and there's an incredible balance of far more happening in this issue, to it not feeling half as crowded as Teen Titans or Superboy. They all have one big conjoined story, but of the three, Legion Lost is hands down the most well written.
Although there's one big annoyance, they keep teasing the true motives and backstory of Harvest. And keep doing it. And then they do it some more. I mean, we've already established he knew about the Hypertaxis, he has 31st Century Technology, and he seemed to have planned for a lot of this. But so many scenes in this issue involve characters piecing things together to come to the same conclusions. Granted we do loop some other puzzle pieces into this; but far too much is postulated with no follow up. I was really annoyed to not have ANY of the clues lead to any new answers by the end of the issue, Couldn't we have the cliffhanger have been the beginning of the big revelation?
In Conclusion: 4/5
It's hard to keep doing these Culling reviews, because each part has the same basic feel, so I have less to say. Yet this arc surprisingly doesn't feel like its at a standstill. Despite being stuck in relatively the same status, things are moving and shifting. And Legion Lost stands a bit taller than the rest. It's better put together.
