Beautiful Characters, Beautiful Art
The art in this book is some of the best in comics today. Gerg Tocchini brings to life a very lived in world. All the backgrounds are detailed. The characters have unique and interesting appearances. There are lots of close ups shots, with great expressive detail. No one in this book is just standing in frame; even the background characters are expertly done.
The story favors character interaction and goes very light on the plot. After finishing the 3-part series, the plot points that are in this book make a lot more sense, but it was a little confusing the first time through. That's the only bad thing I can say about this book. The character interactions are engaging and carry you through the book, easily making up for the muddy plot.
I like Radical's approach of doing a 64 page book. It gives the writer more time to get into the story without having to do resets every 20 pages. Each issue in this series has a variant cover by Alex Maleev. I'm not a fan of variant covers in general, but I really dislike them in a mini-series. In an ongoing series where the artists come and go, it's not that big a deal to have a different artist come in and do the cover. But in a 3 issue mini-series, where every panel is done by the same artist, why bring someone else in to do covers? I would much rather have a consistent look for the series if at all possible.
