    Origin

Lash comes from a secret branch of Inhuman society. He is from Orollan, one of few secluded tribes that split from the main Inhuman society, where, unlike Attilan, Terrigen crystals are scarce resulting in only few are chosen to undergo Terrigenesis. Stating he went through the process "many years ago" he strives to uphold a "sacred truth" which he believes only those worthy should experience Terrigenesis. Lash does not focus on how many Inhumans there can be but how many there should be.

    Creation

First appearing in Inhuman #1, Lash is the creation of writer Charles Soule and artist Joe Madureira. He is the primary antagonist in the Inhuman series as he does not support the Inhuman Royal Family in their decision to accept all Inhumans. He is seen challenging Medusa in issues #1 where he judges new Inhuman Dante worthy then extends an invitation to Orollan. Lash stresses not to trust Medusa or the other Inhuman residing in Attilan.

    Powers & Abilities

Energy Conversion: Lash's inhuman ability is that of energy conversion. He is able to absorb energy into his own being and then convert it into another type of energy, but has so far been limited only to his own unique brand of blue disintegrative energy. Upon converting said energy he is able to unleash it in the form of powerful hand blasts that managed to move even Gorgon and Medusa. So far he's been shown to convert the thermal energy of a volcanic pond into his own energy.

Teleportation: It is presumed that he teleported himself and Flint back into his camp. This is probably achieved by some sort of matter to energy conversion.

Trained Combatant: Lash shows signs of martial training. He's also incredibly agile in his movement.

Lash first appears in Season 2 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as Dr. Andrew Garner, Melinda May's ex-husband and renowned psychologist who often works with S.H.I.E.L.D. to evaluate agents. Some time between seasons 2 and 3, he is exposed to the Terrigenesis process, which allows him to transform into the monstrous Lash. Andrew Garner is portrayed by Blair Underwood and as Lash he is portrayed by Matthew Willig.

At some point in his life, Doctor Andrew Garner met S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Melinda May and they soon elope and began a life together. After a few years of happy marriage, they separated due to the effects of particularly harrowing mission May had in Bahrain, which had caused her to leave field work and begin working in an office at S.H.I.E.L.D.

After the uprising of HYDRA, Garner and Phil Coulson had secret meetings to discuss Coulson’s mental breakdowns, in which he would carve alien symbols onto walls.

While at work at Culver University, Garner was approached by May asking for his assistance counseling a newly powered individual. He agreed but made it clear that his responsibility would be to the subject, not to her, not to S.H.I.E.L.D. Traveling to the Playground, Jemma Simmons gave Garner a breakdown of Skye's medical situation, but Garner decided he would rather meet Skye to learn the information. He found Skye a fairly difficult patient to reach as she would often skirt around questions, often using humor to deflect. After their first session, he spoke to May and got permission to use personal information about their previous relationship to connect with Skye. However, their conversation was interrupted by a sudden earthquake. Running to the Bus, they found Skye asleep, causing the quake; they were able to wake her and stop the shaking. Jemma Simmons recommended that Skye take a sedative, but Garner advised that she not be given drugs.

In their following session, he talked to Skye about her levels of control, and she insisted that due to May's training she could do it. However, just then the plane began to shake again. Garner tried to calm her but they quickly learned that the shaking was not due to her, May who had taken off in the plane to assist Coulson. Furious Garner stormed into the cockpit to confront his ex-wife, but she explained that there was not enough time to get them off and had not wanted to interrupt their session. They arrive in Coulson’s hometown of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, where a team of powered individuals led by Calvin Zabo were threatening the local high school. Upon reaching the high school stadium Skye offered to help in the battle, but Garner opposed this idea, feeling that Skye was not emotionally ready for such a confrontation. However, Skye convinced him to use her relationship with Zabo to their advantage. Entering the stadium May pretended to use Skye as a bargaining tool, aiming a gun at her neck. Before Zabo could respond he was teleported away from the scene by a mysterious eyeless man. A fight broke out between the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and the remaining enhanced while Garner took Skye to safety. But upon seeing the brutality S.H.I.E.L.D. used against the remaining villains, she loses control of her abilities again causing a powerful earthquake. Using the training she had received from May she is able to push aside her emotions and directed her abilities inwards, causing her arms to bruise and knocking her unconscious. When she wakes up, Garner recommends that Skye leave S.H.I.E.L.D. altogether, and upon her refuse recommended that Skye be relieved of field assignments. Before returning to the university he tells May that S.H.I.E.L.D. really hasn’t changed, as she said it had, turning down an offer continue as a consultant.

Sometime later Garner received a phone call from Melinda May claiming that she simply want to hear his voice. Garner noted that he had not had a call like this from May since the mission in Bahrain, implying that she was on a difficult mission. May told him there were many things she never said that she wished she had; Garner said he did too and told her get home safely. After returning from her mission May reconnected with Garner, meeting up for drinks and arranging to take a holiday together.

After the Inhumans' attack on a S.H.I.E.L.D. Coulson called in Garner and asked him to assist in evaluating his team, specifically in assessing if Skye was ready to lead a new team of powered people for the Caterpillar program. Garner agreed and gave Coulson his recommendations for the new team before joining May on their holiday in Maui. However, May was unable to relax and continued to dwell on S.H.I.E.L.D., Grant Ward, and the possibility of Ward hurting her family. When May’s father was involved in a car accident, she left Garner behind and went to Sun City, Arizona to watch over and care for him.

It is can be assumed that it was during this time that Garner was exposed to Terrigen which activated his Inhuman genes transforming him into the monstrosity that would be known as Lash. Sometime after Garner returned to his teaching position at Culver University.

In the aftermath of the Terrigen Mist Garner as Lash began to hunt down and eliminate other Inhumans. At some point Lash began to use intel gathered from Dwight Frye, a fellow Inhuman who is negatively affected by the presence of other Inhumans, to track down his victims. His murderous spree soon attracted the attention of both S.H.I.E.L.D. and the newly formed ATCU (Advanced Threat Containment Unit), both of whom believed that the other was responsible for the killings.

Lash eventually tracked down the Inhuman Lincoln Campbell at a hospital where he was working. Upon his arrival he tortured and killed a security guard in order to learn Campbell's location. Lash then finds Campbell alongside S.H.I.E.L.D. agents Daisy Johnson and Alphonso Mackenzie. He immediately attacked the trio. In response Campbell, using his electrokinesis, attempted to hold Lash back, while Johnson fired a powerful shockwave at Lash and Mackenzie shot him multiple times. Disintegrating a hole in the wall, Lash withdrew. While the group searched for him, Lash snuck behind them and knocked out Mackenzie back with a hard strike to the chest. Again Campbell and Johnson combined their attacks to slow him down, however this time Lash was able to absorb the attacks. As he advanced forward to finish them off Johnson blasted the floor beneath him with shockwaves, destroying it causing him to fall to the floor below. The ATCU arrived soon after causing him to retreat.

A sort while after the events in the hospital Coulson asks him to asses a new asset for the Caterpillars program name Joey Gutierrez, an Inhuman the ability to melt metal. Upon his arrival, he was greeted warmly by Daisy and Mac. As Garner went to conduct the interview with Gutierrez, Johnson asked him about May to which he responded that she should ask May herself. However, Daisy retorted that May had still not returned to S.H.I.E.L.D. since their vacation.

After interviewing Garner deems Gutierrez unready to join the program as he lacked control. Johnson tried to appeal his denial citing the new threats of the ATCU and Lash, but Garner reaffirmed his position saying that there would always be threats, but the safety of everyone was his concern. Garner then asked what she was trying to do with these “Secret Warriors”. Johnson replied that she just wanted to give Inhumans a place to feel that they belonged.

After the successful rescue of Jemma Simmons, Garner phoned May to let her know that Simmons was safe and informed her that he would be returning to Culver University to continue his work. Back in Culver as he was finishing a class he was approached by a new student, Alexander Braun, asking permission to join his Psychology 101 class late. Telling him that he would have to get caught up with the previous lessons; Garner signed the permission slip.
