Captain Bintang`s Night-In-With-A-DVD Movie Review
Firstly, I must say, I`m not a big fan of `anime` movies. But, having read a couple of Lady Death comics, and wanting to know more about the character, I thought I`d give this a whirl...
In medieval Sweden, a young woman, Hope, is burned at the stake for witchcraft. As her body smoulders, she is rescued by her father, Lucifer, and taken to Hell. Spurning his offers - whatever the hell they were - Lucifer banishes his daughter to fend for herself in the demon-infested realms of Hell. Meanwhile, he tortures the trapped souls of Hope`s mother and sweetheart, Niccolo...(evil cackle...)
No bother for Hope however who has taken a couple of huge wolves as pets, and is befriended by ex-demon blacksmith, Cremator, who trains her in the art of swordsmanship. Bit of a strange part here, I couldn`t make head nor tail how Hope got her `powers` - y`know, the flashing blue bolts etc....beats me, ah well.
The result: Hope is now Lady Death, vengeful albino swordswoman with obscure powers, kinky thigh-high boots and black bikini...(Rrrrowwrr!)
What follows is Lady Death and her demon army`s fight against Lucifer and his various cohorts - to avenge her loved ones and find true life once more...
This is okay, I was quite surprised I didn`t mind sitting through it. The animation is fluid enough, but some of the character artwork is bloody awful and the voices just seem wrong, infact Lucifer just sounds....bored. Scenery looks good, and all in all it`s a watchable-enough fantasy adventure. At least I found out what I wanted about the origins of Lady Death...
Now, a live action version....that would be something...
