Powered by the Blue Light of Hope, the Blue Lantern Corps has been tasked with bringing hope to a desperate Universe, to see it through the dark times that lie ahead. The "torch bearer". When the Parallax possessed Hal Jordan destroyed the Central Power Battery on Oa, the Guardians concentrated all of their life force and power and took a desperate gamble to keep the Corps alive. One Guardian, Ganthet, remained alive with a new and unique power ring. Ganthet expended his remaining power to travel to Earth, where he found Kyle Rayner outside the alley of an LA bar. Rayner was a young aimless and somewhat irresponsible artist, hardly the "model" Green Lantern. However with no alternatives, Ganthet granted Rayner the last power ring in the universe. Without any training or direction, Kyle Rayner endured many trials and personal tragedies as he discovery the power inherent in the ring. Rather then wither under the responsibility of protecting a universe alone, Kyle Rayner rose to the challenge and was eventually responsible for re-igniting the Central Power Battery and restoring the Corps. Rayner is now a respected member of the Corps Honor Guard and protector of sector 2814.
