Creation

Kurotsuchi (黒ツチ, Kurotsuchi) is a supporting character of the Naruto series that was created by Masashi Kishimoto, It first began serialization in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump in November 1999. She was later introduced during the Five Kage Summit Arc that began in Volume 48.

She first appeared in Naruto Volume 49, CH. 454 "Enter the Five Kage…!!".

Character Evolution

Masashi Kishimoto has confirmed in interviews that Kurotsuchi's design was intentionally based on a dancer to give a feeling of lightness and agility. Many readers were unsure of her gender until this was confirmed by Kishimoto and the second Naruto Fanbook.

In Japanese, Kurotsuchi's name (黒土, kurotsuchi) means "Black Earth".

Major Story Arcs

Five Kage Summit Arc

With a summit of the five Kages was called by the Raikage, Kurotsuchi went with Akatsuchi as Onoki's bodyguard to the Land of Iron. The summit was to talk about the rise of the Akatsuki and forming an united front. The tense meeting became a battle as Sasuke Uchiha attacked. Kurotsuchi wanted to see Sasuke, since he was the one who killed Deidara. Onoki nearly managed to kill Sasuke when he arrived to the meeting hall, but he was saved by Madara Uchiha, who went on to declare war on the five nations to claim the two remaining Jinchūriki.

Confining the Jinchūriki Arc

With the location of the hiding place of the Jinchūriki being revealed, Onoki went as backup with Kurotsuchi and Akatsuchi. On the flight to the Giant Island Turtle, they ran into Deidara, who had been revived form the dead by Kabuto Yakushi. Kurotsuchi fight with Kabuto on the Island Turtle, and she managed to trick Kabuto into falling in her trap using her Quicklime Jutsu. She surrounded him in her cement for good measure for Aoba to interrogate, but he escaped by transforming into a snake. Kabuto then captured Yamato before transporting away inside his Manda II snake.

Fourth Shinobi World War Arc

In the Shinobi Alliance, Kurotsuchi was placed in the Second Division, under the command of her father, Kitsuchi. During the first battle for her division, Kurotsuchi and Kitsuchi used the Erupt Jutsu to unearth the arm of White Zetsu used by the Akatsuki as foot soldiers. They would eventually fall back from this battle to support the First Division.

Ten-Tails Revival Arc

With Obito Uchiha and the real Madara Uchiha attempting to revive the Ten-Tailed Beast, Kurotsuchi did her part with the other Stone Ninja to trap the monster with the Quicklime technique.

Powers & Abilities

Kurotsuchi is a ninja with advanced abilities that include the rare talent of combining different natures of chakra to create a new form. Her talent as a ninja is high enough that she is one of the bodyguards of the Tsuchikage.

Taijutsu

Taijutsu (体術, taijutsu) is one of the more basic forms of hand-to-hand combat taught to all ninja from the various nations. It typically requires no use of chakra or hand signs. Though Kurotsuchi is undoubtedly skilled and trained in these techniques, she has never displayed the use of any advanced forms in combat.

Ninjutsu

Kurotsuchi has shown the ability to use Earth Style, Fire Style, Water Style, and Lava Style based ninjutsu. Among her abilities is the use of the Kekkei Genkai (血継限界, kekkei genkai) known as Nature Transforamtion. This is a rare inherited trait that is passed down through various ninja clans. This is normally preformed by combining different natures of chakra to create a new form. Kurotsuchi's kekkei genkai is used by combining Earth and Fire Styles to then create Lava Style justu. Very few ninja have this level of talent and control to use or master these techniques.

• Earth Style: Earth Done Jutsu: The Earth Done technique is basic level Earth Style jutsu. Using it created a dome of varying size to shield the user. Kurotsuchi has use this technique to shield herself from tons of falling rock.
• Earth Style: Erupt (土遁・開土昇掘, Doton: Kaido Shōkutsu): By pressing the hands on the ground, the user of this technique can forcibly eject a large number of enemies that have hidden themselves undergroud out of what appears as a large volcano. Kurotsuchi has used this this technique to reveal a large number of White Zetsu that mostly travel underground.
• Lava Style: Quicklime Jutsu (熔遁・石灰凝の術, Yōton: Sekkaigyō no Jutsu): Using her kekkei genkai, Kurotsuchi creates a corrosive quicklime sludge she fires from her mouth. Even if she misses her initial strike, she can combine the attack with water to capture a target as it turns the quicklime into a substance harder than cement.

• Water Style: Trumpet (水遁・水喇叭, Suiton: Mizurappa): Kurotsuchi uses this technique by firing a huge torrent of water from her mouth and compressed through her hands to increase the focus and pressure. She uses this in combination with her Quicklime Jutsu to transform it into cement.

Naruto Shippuden (2007)

The Naruto Shippuden anime series is the second direct adaptation of Masashi Kishimoto's original manga. This series is produced by Studio Pierrot and first began airing in February 15, 2007. Samui's first anime appearance was in Naruto Shippuden Episode 199 "Enter the Five Kage!", which aired on February 17, 2011. Her character in the Japanese series is voiced by Hana Takeda, and the U.S. dub produced by VIZ Media is performed by Laura Bailey.
