Kull in the 80s was better than ever
The third volume of Kull the Conqueror opens with an issue written by Bruce Jones. Kull, King of Valusia attends a royal wedding in a foreign land. The Atlantean King brings a female warrior, Iraina, dressed in tiger skins with his entourage. As part of the festivities champions from different lands are pitted against each other in armed combat. Kull chooses Brule who has to fight Iraina. Iraina delivers a humiliating defeat to Brule.
Some time later Kull learns that Iraina has overthrown the King of Atlantis and now leads an army of female warriors in a campaign to conquer the entire Thurian continent!
Volume two of Kull the Conqueror set the new format for Kull and this third volume follows it. Stories are now 48 pages long, which is much more suited to Kull stories which tend to be told entirely within one issue rather than in episodic form like most other comics.
While the last issue (of volume two) dealt with werewolves, and this issue deals with weretigers, the stories are pretty different. Both stories however significantly expand on the Kull story well beyond what was achieved in even dozens of issues of volume one. Last issue dealt with Kull's short lived romance and wedding, and this one with his family and heritage.
After the heights of last issue (of volume 2), including Bolton's artwork, this issue seems only a bit of a regression in that story and art are a bit more traditional. Otherwise it's a very good Kull comic.
