I've seen this picture a lot, but I don't remember what story line it's from or why Kitty was calling Prof X a jerk.

He is correct. I believe this happened in Uncanny X-Men #168.

Oh yes!  I searched high & low for that issue for so long, but I have it at long last :D  Although she's angry because he's put her with the "X-Babies", strangely the New Mutants don't actually appear in that issue.  It's very much a 'Kitty proves herself by chance to the professor' story, which still makes no sense because the New Mutants won all their battles by chance as well... :p

Different crimes for different times.  The early 80's had a lot of popular comedians using extremely racist material.  It doesn't make it right, but during that time it was as normal for Kitty to use the N word, as it was for Lois Lane to be expected to be the little woman to stay home & raise 2.4 rugrats in the 1950's.  They're old mistakes, and Kitty hasn't been written using that kind of language for a loooong time (thankfully).

actually the only time kitty said it was to illustrate a point to stevie hunter. a kid was dropping the word muite around and he and kitty got into a fist fight. stevie scolded kitty and told her to be more forgiving or something like that. and kitty asked what if he called her the n word. stevie was taken aback. kitty never used the word in a rascist way.

I remember the Larry Bodine funeral where she called out people using derogatory terms. Was the n-word usage before or after?

A duplicate of that image appears in Astonishing #1 as well, as part of a flashback.
