Kel'thuzad was originally a member of a powerful Lordaeron mage faction called the Kirin Tor, in fact he held one of the highest positions within the faction as one out of six members of the Kirin Tor's high council. Despite his high standing and being well respected Kel'thuzad did not have a spotless reputation since he was very insistent on studying the forbidden arts of necromancy and it was in large part due to this that he would be one of the very few in Lordaeron who heard the Lich King's call coming from the frozen lands of Northrend across the ocean.
Tired of the Kirin Tor's complaints about his desire to learn more about Necromancy as well as his lust for the powers of Necromancy Kel'thuzad let the voice of the Lich King into his mind and it did not take much convincing for him to decide that he would set out in search of Northrend and the Frozen Throne that was housing the Lich King. Kel'thuzad traveled the long journey set out before him until he finally reached Northrend's frozen shores, once there he set out towards the Icecrown Citadels where the Frozen Throne was located, witnessing the Lich King's power first hand on the way he just grew ever more insistent to learn more about this power. At his arrival Kel'thuzad was suprised that the numerous undead minions simply let him pass like he was expected, he made his way inside until he eventually reached the Frozen Throne and once there he offered his soul willingly to the Lich King and gained the promise of immortality and power in return.
As his first order Kel'thuzad were to go back to the kingdom of Lordaeron and secretly found a new religion that would worship the Lich King, this religion would soon become the Cult of the Damned. As his second order Kel'thuzad would use the cult that had now grown to the point where they controlled entire villages to place down cauldron's filled with plague energy across the farmlands in order to slowly contaminate all the grain, the grain would then infect the villagers making them sick and dying, and once they died they would rise as undead and serve the Lich King. Kel'thuzad was eventually discovered by Jaina Proudmoore and Arthas Menethil and after a chase and several fights Kel'thuzad was eventually struck down and died by the hand of Arthas.
As Arthas later started his path towards corruption Kel'thuzad would appear to him and guide him as a ghostly apparition. When Arthas later were going to summon one of the leaders of the Burning Legion into the world of Azeroth he would need to use one of Medivh's spell books, as the only one who could read them Kel'thuzad was ressurrected by Arthas using the ancient Sunwell that granted the High Elf's their immortality, and so Kel'thuzad was reborn in the physical world as a powerful Lich.
Kel'thuzad was created by Blizzard Entertainment in 2002 as a major character in their popular RTS game Warcraft 3: Reign Of Chaos.
