The Cost of Bullets
This is going to be a bit of a divisive issue I think. Some drastic changes are made to Deadshot's origins, and it creates a very delicate result. In some ways it appears they've made his origin more generic in some ways, but at the same time there's some little twists to it that make it very effective and definitely extremely fitting for the character. His personality is also probably the most accurate since the New 52 began.
Maybe it's just how much I love Secret Six. I'm so attached to that beautifully twisted scene where Deadshot meets up with his horrible parents at a Wayne party early in his career. Basically the backstory issue for Deadshot in Secret Six was so iconic that I can't help but get upset by the drastic change.
But if I look at the new origin objectively, I really can't find any major holes in it. Deadshot's definitely long been a villain who's a dark reflection of Batman, and his new origin reflects that more. He's basically poor Batman. The circumstances of his parents' deaths are equally random, but more reflective of their socioeconomic status. And there's something almost detached and impersonal about his desire for revenge, almost as if he's only so driven because his exposure to fiction as a child trained him to think that's what he's supposed to do. This whole sense of buried emotions is definitely reminiscent of Gail Simone's iconic Secret Six Deadshot.
What really seals the deal here though is that his motivation to become a perfectionist in terms of accuracy is brilliant and unique. One thing that stuck in his head from his parents' death was the sheer sense of excess. So many wasted bullets. This struck a chord with his previous poverty, and so his desire for pinpoint accuracy comes from a learned sense of conservationism. Every bullet must count.
In Conclusion: 4/5
The new origin for Deadshot is good. I have to admit that. Personal feelings aside, everything about it works. But I can see some hardcore fans being pissed. But this is also one of the first villain issues I would recommend to most people, not just fans of the series. It sets up an important plot thread for Forever Evil, and really it's just a pretty darn good read.
