The JLA takes on the Secret Society of Super-Villains.

In the Secret City, the Justice League of America, and Zatara, attend the funeral of Zatanna's mother, Sindella. The ceremony doesn't sit well with the Batman. Sindella sacrificed her life to save the Justice League of America. Now they attend her funeral with the very people Sindella saved them from, the Hidden Ones. Wonder Woman attempts to allay the Batman's concerns. At the end of the ceremony, Sindella's soul is absorbed by the Hidden Ones. The Batman is outraged. Superman speaks of the differing funerary customs of various cultures.

The Justice League of America, and Zatara, depart the Secret City. Aboard the satellite headquarters of the Justice League of America, the Red Tornado stands watch over the world. Professor Zoom, the notorious Reverse Flash, beats the Red Tornado into unconsciousness, heralding the arrival of the Secret Society Of Super-Villains. On Earth-2, the Secret Society of Super-Villains had been systematically taking down the members of the Justice Society of America. Their initial targets were the Golden Age Atom, and Doctor Mid-Nite.

Ultimately, the Justice Society of America thwarted the scheme. The Secret Society of Super-Villains were forced to flee, with the Justice Society of America hot on their heels. Star Sapphire, and the Wizard, managed to open a gateway into inter-dimensional space. The Wizard had presumed they would emerge on Earth-1. Instead, the Secret Society of Super-Villians found themselves trapped, for six months, between dimensions. Professor Zoom managed to lock onto the Justice League of America's transmatter machine, allowing the Secret Society of Super-Villains to escape.

The Secret Society of Super-Villains uses the Justice League of America's transporter to teleport to Israel. Their unauthorized use of the transporter summons the Justice League of America. After determining that the Red Tornado is not seriously injured, Zatanna casts a spell that reveals the Secret Society of Super-Villains as the culprits. The Justice League of America journey to an archaeological dig, in Israel. The Batman attacks the foreman, who is revealed to be the Wizard. The Secret Society of Super-Villains attack the Justice League of America.

The Wizard orders the Secret Society of Super-Villains not to kill the Justice League of America. Despite the Wizard's order, the Blockbuster does try to murder the Batman. The Wizard is forced to subdue the Blockbuster. The Secret Society of Super-Villains subdues the Justice League of America. Though the Secret Society of Super-Villains were able to extricate their bodies from inter-dimensional space, their souls remained behind. Using an ancient mystical artifact, the Wizard exchanges the souls of the Secret Society of Super-Villains, with the souls of the Justice League of America.

Note: This story arc is reworked from the canceled Secret Society of Super Villains series from 1978. The story arc is later referenced heavily during the Identity Crisis story arc.

Coming off of the death of Zatanna's mother, this issue is a little bit stuck between the previous story and the following one. The heroes attend to Sindella's funeral and have a surprisingly deep conversation about death for a comic set in this time. As they return they find that the Secret Society of Super Villains has infiltrated the satellite and they must now track them down in Israel. This leads into the identity swap story line which would later become so important as the precursor to...
