mattdemers's Justice League: Generation Lost #24 - It All Comes Down to This! review

    Finale; thank the (Maxwell) Lord?

Generation Lost finishes up with its 24th issue; the questions is, was it worth that much of our time?

    The Good

There's some good payoff in this issue for some long-standing story events that've evolved in these 24 issues. Blue Beetle gets a measure of revenge for his namesake, Booster gets to fight Ted Kord "like a man" and the Fire/Red Rocket flirtation that I picked up in previous issues is still hinted at [correction: and has been acted upon. You miss one issue and people start makin' out].

However, these payoffs are subtle, and don't offset the suck of the rest of the book. Pretty much the only major good to come out of this issue is that we're going to get a JLI monthly, which means more Jaime Reyes as Blue Beetle. I can't complain about that.

    The Bad

For starters, Captain Atom blows up. Again. I think I should go back and read the entire series again, just so that I can count how many times this plot device is used. Nathan gets into a fight, absorbs some energy, then flies off into space to detonate, and we're expected to keep believing that it's some dangerous phenomena. Spoiler to Winick: if it happens at least once a fight, it kind of loses its edge.

Maxwell Lord getting off relatively scott-free just makes me feel like this entire series was just a waste of paper. From the outset, it was clear that the JLI was going to be able to put a bookend on this issue because they were the only team that could solve it. They had the experience with Max from their past team and were left unaffected by the whole mind-control that kicked off the series.

Instead of getting a resolution to the story, we see that Max lost nothing in the end. All he had to do was reverse the mind control.

Max is still head of Checkmate, and his crimes with the OMACs are absolved; we get to see each member of the JLI stewing over a YouTube video that Lord has released explaining "his side" of the story.  Booster and Batman make some biting cultural commentary about how he looks like a "common, humble man" uploading it online instead of co-opting a news broadcast, like we're supposed to take a good long look at ourselves and think "Man, we can never control the freedom of the Internet, man..."

And after a conversation with a friend, I just realized: where the f^*^& was Oracle on that one? Isn't that... her thing?

My point is, all of that should not take twenty-goddamn-four issues to do. At best, that should have been a six (or twelve, if we're being generous) issue arc.

    The Verdict

Next time Keith Giffen wants to start a book, he should be contracted to finish it; handing it off to Judd Winick (who has ruined much better series' than this) seems like a cop-out, especially when the characters are heavily associated with him. I have a strong hunch that this series would never have gotten printed without Giffen's involvement: it never should have finished without it, either.

I agree this series was pretty long winded. Trimming the fat should have been a priority. Nontheless, I enjoyed it for the most part and was glad to see my favorite JL incarnation get more time in the spotlight. JLI ongoing series here I come.

See? That's what really annoys me about the series. It was created due to the large amount of nostalgia value associated with the characters, and ended up doing nothing with them. People will look at it and say "Man, it's like the hilarity of that old series! The gang's back together!" and not actually care if the story actually works.

Yes, because a villain winning is totally something that happens all the time, and therefore doesn't make an interesting story.

The Rocket Red/Fire flirtation ALREADY paid off about 3 issues ago when they MADE OUT.

And I'm pretty sure 'Oracle' would have trouble handling this internet stuff being, you know, 'DEAD.'

Except Maxwell Lord has been "winning" (no Sheen pun intended) for twenty four issues. He has had the Justice League's number for the entire series, and to see him get off with a slap on the wrist (or arguably ahead, as no one's chasing him anymore) is inexcuseable.

The Rocket Red/Fire flirtation ALREADY paid off about 3 issues ago when they MADE OUT.

Fixed and updated. I'm still missing some issues out of this series. Thank you.

Notice your use of quotes within a quote; Babs is still active as an information broker. Just not under the same name. That doesn't turn off. You don't stop calling Bruce Wayne Batman when he's off gallivanting in time.

As much as I want to see Max get his, I'm with you on the reality of the bad guy winning. A lot of the times the bad guy does in fact win in life, and win big in the short term at least. Doesn't happen enough in comics. Sure he's been winning in this series, but that was part of the appeal for me. Max was the villain I loved to hate and I loved the interactions of the JLI members and their persevering against the odds. If nathan else, folk, I got my ongoing JLI book out of this. I think Winick's done an excellent job on this series, though I do recognize it's flaws that it's criticized for. I very much look forward to reading this issue.

How many villains spend most of the story 'winning' UNTIL THE END. That's not all that uncommon.

Ok ok, but is Babs the omnipotent master of the internet? is it not feasible that she couldn't deal with this? Plus, as she mentioned in Batgirl, she IS pretty busy building a new internet.

Also, I counted for you the number of times Captain Atom flew off into space to explode in this series. IT WAS 3. Including this one. The first time it seemed legit, the second time the threat was more about what radiation he COULDN'T absorb, which, as you should recall, resulted in thousands of death in Chicago. And this time it wasn't treated as a huge threat, in fact, after complaining before that he was sick of being thrown around through time, was able to WEILD this inconvenience and use it against Max on his own terms.

A 1 out of 5 seems excessive. It's not like Winnick made a Rise of Arsenal quality story here.

This series was nothing like the old series. I'll agree with you there. But I dont think it was trying to be. The nostalgia aspect was great but I read this series because it showed me sides of characters I thought I knew. Booster as a leader, A character back from the dead and too afraid to fight and chance it happening again in Tora, and most of all it made me really like Capt. Atom. Something that not even Giffen and DeMatteis could pull off.

Wait a second, this unprofessional troll of a review is the official featured review for the finale of Generation Lost!? When I first read it I just assumed it was some amatuer venting his rage at something he didn't agree with, but this is absolutely ridiculous. This was in no way a one star book! The art was good and the story was well told. Even someone who hated the actual story content has to admit that.  Heck, you even admit in the review that you didnt read the entirety of the series thus leaving you unqualified to review the FINALE!  A one star should be something atrocious, something that you can barely stand to look at, let alone read.  The average 4.4 star rating on the page seems to show that the general consensus is against you on this one. Poor show Comicvine, poor show.

Sir, I hate giving star reviews, period. I only do it because 0 out of 5 looks excessively cruel.

I agree with all your comments. . I felt gypped after reading this issue. I wanted Max Lord to be brought to justice for his crimes. Basically all he got was slap on the wrist. What's going to stop him from to trying to kill Wonder Woman  or finding a way to midewip the entire world again.

All JLI accomplished was to give Max a  temporay setback.  They basically accomplished nothing in the end. The story basically felt like drawn out first arc. It did not need twenty four issues to tell the story.

I felt rage when saw to  be continued on the last page.  How many more issues is it going to take to stop Max Lord. 24 issues was enough. I am huge fan of all versions of Justice League. However, I am not going to pick up this new monthly when it comes out.

I have to disagree with the reviewer here. I really loved this series from beginning to end. I generally dislike Winick, but he did a great job of writing a straightforward superhero story. Don't make this something is clearly is not. Winick delivered the goods on reviving an old team without trying to reinvent the wheel while not trying to ape the Giffen/DeMatteis era.

As promised, Judd Winick brings Generation Lost to an action-packed conclusion. The Justice League International battle it out with OMAC Prime for the sake of Wonder Woman while Booster Gold slugs it out personally with Maxwell Lord. But best of all, the issue ends with the promise of Justice League International ongoing series. The action in this issue is very well handled with several cool points in it. My own favorite action beat is Booster's suicide dive on Max. The ultimate defeat of OMAC Pr...

I'll be frank. The official review of Justice League Generation Lost is, for all intents and purposes, biased to the highest degree. So, for the sake of brevity, and to reinforce a point, I shall make my review of Issue #24. I can assure you, this issue is not as bad as it's panned out to be. There are some flaws, to be fair, but none that reaches such magnitude. Let's get on with it.The Good See? Summary.
