Jonah Hex Rewound - An Entry Point for New Readers

The knife behind the neck, a standard Jonah Hex trick.
The knife behind the neck, a standard Jonah Hex trick.

Jonah Hex #35 is kind of a rewind back to the beginning. The story starts with a standard Jonah Hex scenario: Hex is tracking fugitives into a canyon where they think they have the drop on him, but he circles back and gets the drop on them. When held at gunpoint, he uses the standard trick of pulling a knife out from behind his neck to kill the would be shooter. Then, in what has become a very standard Hex tactic, he dresses the other thug up in his own Confederate uniform and puts him tied and gagged on a horse through the canyon to draw the fire of the remaining bad guy. It truly is a wonder his Confederate Army jacket isn't so bullet-riddled and bloodstained at this point as to be unusable!

Anyway, Hex takes the two dead and one living criminal into town to collect the bounty. There he's recognized and a telegram is sent to Richmond, VA, to one eagle cane carrying Mr. Turnbull, who has vowed to see Hex dead. The bulk of the issue is a flashback retelling the story of why Turnbull has a vendetta against Hex.

Overall, from the setup encounter with the bank robbers to the extended flashback, everything here seems like we've seen it before, because we have. This is essentially an unofficial reboot to the series that can be read as a continuation of the previous saga, or an excellent entry point for new readers.
