How to Catch Up with Constantine?

I'm mainly a Lantern and JL reader, but I have always wanted to get into John Constantine, even though everyone hates on the Constantine movie, I loved it, and I'm really excited about the new TV show.

If you had to make a list of essential trade-books that spells out Constantine completely, not the little side stories, but the important parts of his story, what would it be?

Also, is Constantine, the new title after Hellblazer, is it a reboot or a continuation? I'm thinking about picking them up.

@dagmar_merrill: Lol, that's the problem, 300 issues. Are there any main points in it so I can look for just trades?

@vitalius: Awesome, I'll start picking Constantine up then, thanks. I'm just not that big on JLD to be honest.

@doctorshades24: Dangerous Habits is considered by most to be the best story.

Why do people always want to "catch up"? Why not just read a series, hopefully enjoy it, and not worry whether you'll be able to catch up with recent events any time soon or not?

DC has been reprinting Hellblazer in numbered collections and I would start with the first one.
