In addition to the episodes of a new Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm and Disney have begun development on multiple stand-alone movies that will offer new stories beyond the core Saga. Gareth Edwards will direct the first stand-alone film, with a screenplay by Gary Whitta. The film is due out December 16, 2016.

Gareth Edwards blazed into the filmmaking forefront with his acclaimed work on Monsters, a film he wrote, directed and served on as cinematographer and visual effects artist. The skill and vision readily apparent inMonsters earned him the high-profile spot directing this year's smash hit Godzilla.

"Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life - join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited & honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm,” said Edwards.

Gary Whitta’s screenwriting credits include 2010’s The Bookof Eli starring Denzel Washington. He is also well known as a journalist and editor in the video game industry, as well as part of the BAFTA award-winning team on Telltale Games’ adaptation of The Walking Dead.

Whitta states, "From the moment I first saw the original movie as a wide-eyed kid, Star Wars has been the single most profound inspiration to my imagination and to my career as a writer. It is deeply special to me, so to be given the opportunity to contribute to its ongoing legacy, especially in collaboration with a film-maker as talented as Gareth, is literally a dream come true. I'm still pinching myself."

Time to start speculating. Who or what do you think will be in this stand-alone movie? Will they give fans the Boba Fett movie they've been asking for? Young Yoda? Young Han Solo? Random Jedi?

Really hoping it's a Boba Fett movie. Sure, I have my issues with Edwards' Godzilla, but I think he has talent.

Young Boba/Han movie. It'd be pure genius. That, or something else from between III and IV. There's so much untapped potential there (in the movies).

The fact that Disney were working on multiple spin off movies was confirmed over a year ago in an interview Bob Iger gave to CNBC (http://www.cnbc.com/id/100434935). That's not news at all. The news here is that Edwards and Whitta are involved.

Boba Fett, Han Solo, or Lando Movie. I could see those guys doing that.

I might be the only one, but I kind of doubt that this is a Boba Fett movie. Lawrence Kasdan has always been attached to the Fett movie, unless working on Episode VII took him out of the running.

A Darth Malgus movie with Benicio Del Toro as Malgus...Make it happen.

I dont think spin off films are right with this franchise, I know disney owns Lucasfilm and they're trying to suckle out every dime but it cause an overload of Star Wars, and make the new trilogy they are doing seem less special or at least the side films less special. I just want a good trilogy again, and they can do TV or whatever, just keep the film format the same

Apparently Edwards is doing another 2 Godzilla movies. So after 3 godzilla movies and a star wars movie he is easily going to be one of the big directors in Hollywood.

Obi-Wan

I too would like to see an Obi-Wan movie that shows his life and actions between Episodes III and IV. Ewan McGregor is still a great choice to continue this role. It would be interesting to see him have interactions with Uncle Owen and Aunt Veroo and keeping watch over a very young Luke Skywalker. I'm sure the Empire is looking for Obi-Wan and Darth Vader can be involved somehow as well.

I really liked Monsters but Godzilla was meh at best.

It should have Natalie Portman in Leia's slave outfit. I don't care about anything else Star Wars.
