The JSDF is been widely portrayed in various Japanese kaiju films dating back to Gojira (Godzilla, King of the Monsters) in 1954. They always clash with not only Godzilla, but also other giant monsters like King Kong, Gamera, Gaira, Sanda, and more.

Published as a novel series by Takumi Yanai in 2006 to 2009, the JSDF travel through a gate to a fantasy world dubbed the "Special Zone" after an army of knights, monsters and dragons invaded Tokyo's Ginza District. The military might of the JSDF astonishes the Special Zone's residents as they help refugees from a giant dragon attack and repelling armies of enemy forces.
