Not sure how much a petition could help.  Since Marvel officially announced that Cheadle will be in Iron Man 2 and The Avengers, they'd probably still be stuck paying him unless they had a get out of jail free clause in the contract.  At the end of the day, it's about money.  Now if people were going to boycott the movies if Howard wasn't in it, that could be different but realistically, people aren't going to see them for Howard.

This is crazy! As much as continuity is great one actor with a fairly minor role shouldn't make that much of a difference. Howard's was great in the role of Rhody but I'm sure everyone can cope with a new actor just fine. Sheesh.

I signed, but it really doesnt matter to me. Don Cheadle is a good actor. I loved Hotel Rwanda and I own Crash. But I have to agree with Fesak.

We can't expect everyone to stay on board for a movie. we get lucky in some aspects but not always. I've heard people complain about bana not reprising his role as Hulk. But I have to say I was quite happy with Edward Norton.

i'm just glad Robert Downey Jr. Stayed on. I was doubtful of him in the beginning but he did a fantastic job in my opinion. Now to find someone better then Paltrow...

As a minor appearance his replacement won't ruin the continuity much, if at all. I bet not much people remember seeing him there, or knew he would be War Machine in next movie. Now, if some main character would be replaced, then there would come the whole continuity issue into question.

Entertainment Weekly published an article giving some further insight as to why he was replaced.  Basically he was a little difficult on the set and was also paid more than the others since he was the first signed.  Check out the article for yourself.

Changing actors doesn't destroy continuity. That would be the same as saying changing an artist or inker on a comic would change continuity. It's the visual. I was against Cheadle's appointment to the position at first, then I saw him on TMZ - he's added a lot of muscle mass and doesn't look nearly as scrawny as he was; he also shaved his head (don't know if it's to be Rhody or something else) which makes him look a lot younger. I'm not opposed now. But the crazy thing was that for Howard's tiny part in Iron Man 1, he made more money than any of the leads! That's what an Oscar will do for you (Halle Berry anyone?).

Playing devil's advocate, Howard said he was never asked to be in the following movies so there was never an "argument" over money. It was likely something on the other side and I can't blame them for that. They have every right to say RDJ owned that role and deserves more pay but rather than offer TH less, we'll just find someone else. I've heard rumors that it was also about his attitude, but that isn't confirmed.

Dumbledore was recast don't forget. It is possible to get an equally good if not better actor to fill someone's shoes. Look at how many men have been cast as Batman. You can't possibly believe all them were great. It's natural to compare them but seriously, a replacement can be better. There was plenty of talk over recasting Spider-Man too but now TM has resigned for more films; still, do mean there's no one else out there that could play that part?

I think the belief that TH is the only Rhody is casting a very limiting shadow over the talent of the acting pool.
