It seems to me that Tony Stark might be a mutant, like the x-men Forge.   I a cave he built first built his super armor.   He updates and changes it to fit any and every situation.   He made it to fit in a small brief case.

Could he be a mutant with the ability to build any technology such as a super armor technological suit?      

That would be kinda lame, saying that someone as smart as Tony has to be because of a mutation. What about Reed Richards, Hank Pym and Victor Von Doom? They're just smart, maybe even considered superhumanly smart but not mutants. That would tarnish what they've done in the past. Besides the way they describe Forge's power is that it allows him to make intuitive leaps instead of figuring out the steps like people who are genuinely geniuses.
