Rex wins.
My review for INVINCIBLE #113. THINGS CHANGE!
The Good
WHAT AN AMAZING ISSUE! There has been chaos and death for the last couple of issues, now it is time to see what Invincible is willing to do to stop Rex. I absolutely enjoyed what Robert Kirkman has done up to this point, with Robot/Rex's character. The Flaxan dimension did not change Rex into the person he is today, it only showed him who he truly is. I enjoyed how Kirkman made that extremely obvious in the last couple of issues. It showed us readers of a small glimpse of what Rex is capable of and that no one will stand in his way, not even his girlfriend, Monster Girl. So seeing Rex be violent and manipulate people to better his hold over the Earth was extremely cool to see in the past issues, and finally in this one. Because without a doubt, Robert Kirkman went all out and did an incredible job with Rex's character for a good reason in this issue.
The reason being, Kirkman focused primarily on Rex and how "Logical." world domination was. I liked seeing Kirkman have Rex and Invincible talk it out, instead of fighting. (There will be plenty of time for a bloodbath later.) Anyway, having Rex talk with Invincible was truly amazing because it showed us how he thinks a bit more and that Rex, deep down, does kind of regret having to kill, and capture, many of his friends and teammates. The flashback sequences to prior Invincible issues was a nice touch and it made Rex appear more human and sad that he was left with this choice to better the Earth by taking it over. I really like seeing this in Rex's character, because it shows his confliction, but without a doubt he'll hold onto his power and fight for it to the death, but I like seeing how his actions are meaningful and have already impacted Invincible and the other heroes. I am interested in seeing where this series goes as Rex continues to fight for a perfect world, and how much he truly is willing to give up to maintain that power.
THE ARTWORK BY RYAN OTTLEY IS PERFECTION!
The Bad
My only complaint is that it ended.
The Verdict
5 out of 5! Obviously, the only solution to an INVINCIBLE deficiency is to have two issues come out in one month, instead of just one. (That's the only way everyone will be happy.) This issue was outstanding! Sure it wasn't the most violent or the most emotional, but it sure does an awesome job at giving us a world ruled by Rex, a hero turned world conquerer. I'm interested in seeing what will happen next in the events to come and how it will shape all heroes, especially Invincible. It's going to be one amazing joyride, that's for sure!
