"Shhh. I'm Hunting Wabbits."
The war between vampires and humanity kicks off here, but can Bennett stop it before it starts?
The Good
This comic is NOT the Twilight rip-off the early solicitations made it out to be! Instead, readers are rewarded with an eerie and morbid urban tale of lovers at opposite morals and believes. There's Andrew Bennett, the protagonistic vampire hunting his own kind to preserve the hidden peace between vampires and humanity. Then there's his lover Mary, desperately craving violent liberation for her kind to rise up from having to live long unfulfilled existences to avoid contact with humanity. Yet, they are both hopelessly in love together. Writer Joshua Hale Fialkov spins a wonderful yarn on the conflicts, both the murderous rampages of Mary's minions and the moral perspectives of vampires in their position within a (super)human-dominated hierarchy. It's simply delightful stuff!
Let's talk about the art, for if anything pulls a new reader into a series its this. Andrea Sorrentino's shadow-drenched and macabre art simply is perfect for his series! There be no shiny, sparkly over-sexualised beings here, only the bleak yet stark chiaroscuro effect that the story deserves. Whether a lakeside discussion between lovers or a street littered with corpses, the art gets it just right!
The Bad
One should never judge a (comic) book but it's cover - and the proverb never stood stronger than here. Not to say t's a bad cover, but having shiny shiny youthful vampires on the first issue of such a morbid tale is a disservice to potential-readers. I'll admit I was put off by the cover, however the overwhelming positives reviews here on Comicvine made me have a go. I certainly do not regret that change of heart!
Conclusion
This is as vampire romance should be - dark, gritty and downright bloody! Throughly recommended!
