For a year, Bruce Banner had been hiding in India working as a doctor. When Loki stole the Tesseract, Black Widow came to Banner in the hope that he would be able to track down the Tesseract from its gamma radiation emissions. Banner had just discovered that the Tesseract was being taken to New York when the ship was attacked by Loki's human forces. Due to the ensuing panic, Banner "Hulked out" and had to be lured into jumping of the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier to avoid its complete destruction.
Banner awakened in a warehouse and burrowed a motorbike so as to reach New York where Loki's Chitauri allies were invading and help the rest of the Avengers. He revealed just how good his self control was by becoming Hulk in seconds saying "I'm always angry". During the battle, Hulk took out many Chitauri and saved Iron Man when he fell from the sky.

The Planet Hulk film mostly mirrored the comic books. Hulk was shot into space by the Illuminati so he could no longer damage the Earth. Hulk was meant to hit a world without any intelligent life forms however, Hulk's struggling caused the pod to go off course and into a wormhole. Hulk found himself on a planet called Sakaar and was severely weakened by the wormhole. Hulk was forced into becoming a gladiator for the entertainment of the Red King. When the Red King showed his true evil by mistake, Hulk defeated him with the aid of his former aid Caiera. Hulk went on to become the King of Sakaar and took Caiera as his wife.

This animated film featured a much de-powered Hulk fighting against Wolverine and Weapon X. During his fight with Wolverine, Hulk was taken out by Weapon X using tranquilizers. When he was set free he destroyed the base of Weapon X.
