Plot
The Grinch of Mount Crumpit didn't like Christmas at Whoville, who has a small heart. He came up with a wonderful, awful idea to steal Christmas with his dog Max as a reindeer. Their first stop was at Cindy Lou Who's house. As he tried to stuff up the tree, Cindy thought that the Grinch was Santa. He gave Cindy a drink and stuffed the tree up. After he took everything in Cindy Lou Who's house, he stole everything from Whoville, including the Christmas trees. He rode his load to Mount Crumpit and tried to dump out the gifts until he heard the Whos singing away. He stopped his bag from falling, making his heart grow three sizes. He rushed down to Whoville and gave the presents back.
Legacy
The 1966 Chuck Jones special was an unexpected hit and became a classic Christmas special. It introduced traits that would be reused in other Grinch adaptations such as the Grinch's green fur color and the song "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch". The 2000 live-action Ron Howard film used those traits and put away a more believable explanation of why the Grinch doesn't like Christmas, in which he was bullied by the Whos and the Whos basked in the materialism of Christmas. In that version, the Grinch was played by Jim Carrey and Cindy Lou Who was played by Taylor Momsen. In the 2018 Illumination feature-length computer animated film, an alternative origin story of the Grinch where he didn't have Christmas at all was used. The Grinch was voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch and Cindy Lou Who was voiced by Cameron Seely. Unlike the first two adaptations, the Grinch arrives at Cindy Lou Who's house for his last stealing gig instead of his first.
