The Holyoke Publishing Company first entered the comic book business as a printer. It became a publisher by taking over the publications of printing clients who went out of business as the U.S. entered World War II.

With issues cover-dated January 1942, Holyoke took over the two titles published by Frank Z. Temerson's company Helnit, as well as inheriting Temerson's creative and editorial staff. Both titles reverted to Temerson (whose company was by then called Et-Es-Go, which soon changed to Continental) in mid-1943. For this reason, Holyoke is often confused with Temerson / Helnit / Continental.

Additionally, Holyoke took over Fox Publications' Blue Beetle. It would lose the title and character to Fox's revived company in 1944, but would continue most of the non-title features in its own new series a few months later.

There have been a few Holyoke characters that have been revived by DC Comics as well as Dynamite Entertainment under their Project Superpowers title
