In the original Inner Circle (then known as the Council of the Chosen) of the Hellfire Club, Sebastian Shaw was merely the Black Bishop under Ned Buckman and Paris Seville, but he was destined for a much greater title in the Club. After he managed a takeover of the NY branch he renamed the Council of the Chosen, the Lords Cardinal and made himself the Black King. However, when he is once thought dead in his absence his son fails an attempt to rule and the London branch also dissolves. So Sebastian returns and once again takes another attempt at the Hellfire Club, as the Black King he tries to restore the Hellfire Club to its true power and glory. Then, for a time, he retires and Selene takes control of the Hellfire Club. He later returns but this time, the title Black King is not enough for him, he becomes the Lord Imperial, the overseer of the entire Hellfire Club. He was a member of Emma Frost Imaginary Inner Circle alongside Perfection, Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Cassandra Nova. Recently, the title of Lord Imperial has passed on to Sunspot but it can be assumed that Shaw craves to regain his title.
Selene Gallio first became a member of prestigious Hellfire Club after the Dark Phoenix Saga when the Black Queen position became vacant in the Inner Circle. Selene quickly came in to fill in the void and as such has often been referred to as the Black Queen. Selene then tried to make her own Inner Circle after Shaw's apparent death but they turn on her and the attempt fails. However when Sebastian Shaw returns and restores order to the Hellfire Club, Selene is once again named the Black Queen of the Hellfire Club. After some time, the majority of senior members are no longer a part of the Club and so Selene takes control and makes an Inner Circle of her own. Its members include Blackheart, Daimon Hellstorm and Sunspot but her reign is short-lived. So Shaw once again takes over the Hellfire Club, this time as the Lord Imperial, and Selene remains the Black Queen even though she is kept trapped beneath the Club's Headquarters. Selene has since escaped and now is no longer affiliated with the Club, she was last seen with her groom, Wither.
