The Setting Sun on the Run that could of been.

The major problem with this "Anthology" is that it is incomplete.  The Setting Sun trade was supposed to be 6-self contained stories where Warren Ellis explores what Horror humans make Verses Magick and the reality of it.  The missing issue was the original issue #141 which was called "Shoot".  "Shoot" would find print over 10 years after being written and illustrated. "Shoot" would also be the issue that led to issues with Ellis and management at DC Comics.  After issue #143 Ellis would leave Hellblazer Prematurely.   Without "Shoot" this compilation does feel like it missing something and the fact that it is only 4 issues is a problem.

There is a strong point to this trade and that is that Ellis did write the scripts to suit the style of the artist.  Frank Teran's heavy use of inks added to the dark and mystifying mood the first story was trying to take. Tim Bradstreet's art is like photographs how real he can get the art sometimes.  Javier Pulido eases the horror in his story of the ugly violence in war.  James Romberger recreated many of the lovely ladies in John Constantine's life.  Marcelo Frusin is a master of mixing Shadows and smoke on page to create suspense.

Each issue is self-contained but the later issues do depend on the older issues.  These newer issues make more sense if you understand the lessons in Magick and Horror that are taught in the issues before.  Without Shoot, one of the lessons is lost. Warren Ellis Hellblazer run will always be the run that could of been.
