the_mighty_monarch's Hawk & Dove #4 - The Interrogation review

    Inconsistent Crap

The Good: Terrible art style aside, this cover looks pretty nice. Nothing too terrible aside from something mentioned later, but it's not that big. The design is simple, but it works.
The artwork looks cool even if its terrible. And it's ewasy to make fun of.
The story was dumb, but not exactly a pain to read.

The Bad: Ok, on the cover, what the hell is up with Dove's... cape... thing....? We've never seen ANY evidence that its see through, and there's NO WAY IN HELL it follows the contours of her body that exactly, A: because that's impossible and B: because the rest of the cape couldn't flow the way it does if the part that looks like it's snug is really that snug.
The artwork is STILL being done by Rob Liefeld, so... body proportions are heinous, everything is ridiculously over exaggerated, Hawk has only two facial expressions while Dove only has one.... etc.
I'm also noticing an even more sickening trend in Liefeld's artwork, his tendency to constantly reuse the same exact poses in all the fights. Of which there are about three. Poses. The fights are starting to feel stupidly repetitive.
The story is.... eh. It's just rehashing a bunch of stuff that we basically knew from clues the first three issues, except now we hear it more straightforward while Hawk and Dove hear it for the first time. Also it's told with a huge sprawl of mediocre exposition.
So many plot twists and turns here that just make no goddamn sense. Pretty much all of them are convoluted together to create a scenario in which Condor and Swan escape.
Oooh I get to talk about the art again! The style of Condor's restraints fluctuates WILDLY throughout the issue. First the cover basically his entire lower arms, then later we see it's two straps, and then a page or 2 later it's only simple handcuffs. Even if your art is terrible but badass, you could at least try to keep the stuff you draw consistent. And the editors for this book should be ashamed of themselves for missing this. Oh, and Condor mentiones a time on his watch when he's clearly NOT WEARING A WATCH. No sarcasm was implied, he just mentions it. He could've said, like, "that clock" even though we never see a clock. At least we never proved there wasn't a clock.
Why would being around the Avatar of War make the Avatar of Peace more warlike? Wasn't the ENTIRE POINT of these characters that they balance each other out? It's not like they're becoming unbalanced due to outside events, Condor clearly says that that's just what happens.

    In Conclusion: 1/5
So it's Rob Liefeld's terrible and stupidly lazy artwork with bad body proportions and copy pasted facial expressions.... and copy pasted poses. Except he obvious didn't copy paste EVERYTHING because there's some blatant inconsistancies with the artwork. Apparently the editors didn't care enough to do their job right, so why should I care about the end result. Buy it if you want a good laugh at the awfulness (Because I will say this, it's not regular bad, it's honestly so bad it's funny.). But let's hope this series is the first New 52 to get canned. It is hands down the worst.

This is not the story that this series needed at the moment or at least not in this issue.  With Condor and Swan seemingly apprehended in the previous issue it is now time for Hawk and Dove to get some answers.  Except the answers come in the convoluted (and not very engaging) narrative provided by Condor.  Just to get there though took half of the issue in a lot of needless grandstanding almost as if they intended just to fill some space in the issue.  Also the apparently key development with D...

Hawk and DoveWhat we can like about it:It’s an interrogation. Now in interrogations you don’t always get the info you want or someone can or mislead. Though in this book we get, what seems to be, the truth. Condor has been caught and before he goes away Hawk and Dove have a moment to ask a few Q’s. For anyone who loves Deadman we see that he will be playing an intricate part to the story line. And we learn some secrets that will leave us with more Q’s. All around Stearling is playing a good card...
