Hauntingly Wicked
The Story:
Daniel Kilgore is a priest who gets tangled in his brother Kurt's life of espionage. His brother was a secret agent and was murdered because someone thought he had a scientists notebook which was stolen when the scientist was murdered. Now Daniel is "haunted" by his brothers ghost. He can see him and talk to him, but no one else can. Together they can fuse into Haunt, and become virtually indestructible. They must overcome their differences to find the culprit responsible for Kurt's death while protecting his wife.
My Thoughts:
Haunt is an Image Comics series created by Robert Kirkman (Walking Dead, Invincible) and Todd McFarlane. When I read the premise of the comic, I became interested and decided to check this series out. The names working on this comic also played a contributing factor in me wanting to read this.
I'm simply fascinated by the story. Kirkman adds a lot of plot twists which peak your excitement while reading this. A great balance of action, drama and suspense which seems to flow naturally. One thing I found ironic was the last name of the main character. "Kilgore" are the words "kill" and gore" put together in which this comic has plenty of both. Coincidence? I'll let you decide.
The art is by Ryan Ottley who works with Robert Kirkman on Invincible. I think his art here shines way more than what he does on the Invincible series. I think a lot of that has to do with the coloring. FCO Plascencia superbly colors Ottley's art rendering the dark and gritty feel provided in Kirkman's script. The comic has a lot of blood which was drawn and colored perfectly. It looks realistic which some artists are simply not capable of doing. Todd McFarlane's covers are wickedly awesome.
This is definitely a series worth investing in. This first volume only costs $9.99 which is a great deal for a trade. Some people may say Haunt is a rip off of Venom or Ant-Venom, but if you pick this up and read it, you'll see that Haunt packs way more depth than Venom. His look may not be completely original, but the story is.
