Founded by Paul Hamlyn in 1950, who sold the company in 1964 to the International Publishing Company, then bought it back in 1986 to become a subsidiary of his new company, Octopus Books, which he sold a year later to Reed International. During the early 1990s, Hamlyn held the license to publish 2000 AD collections. In 2001 Reed sold Octopus Books, including Hamlyn to Hachette Livre.
