After Kyle Rayner's brief death during Blackest Night, Guy Gardner was so enraged that he attracted a red power ring and became a Red Lantern. After the battle, he was successfully purged from most of the red ring's taint by Moho, though some remained in his blood. He later became a Red Lantern again when Krona took over the Green Lantern Corps and his green power ring became off-limits. This time, he was fully purged of its influence by Kyle Rayner with a blue power ring. Following the destruction of most of the Red Lantern Corps and much of the Green Lantern Corps by the Guardians of the Universe's Third Army and Volthoom the First Lantern, he was again asked by Hal to infiltrate the Reds to see their plans against the Greens. Ultimately, he opted to stay, becoming the de-facto leader of the newly democratic corps after taking charge away from Atrocitus and Dex-Starr.
