Is it Worth seeing GOTG 2? Hell yeah!

I guess I’ll start with what I enjoyed, eh? And, coincidentally, the first thing that I really enjoyed what at the very beginning of the film. I am, of course, talking about those absolutely incredible opening credits. It was great to see baby Groot dance his way through this battle, setting the tone for the rest of the film. The trailers showed us so much of this scene but, really, the majority of it is from Groot’s point of view!

Talking about the trailers, I think that this movie had an amazing ratio of what you got to see in the trailers, compared to what is in the film. I remember thinking that I wouldn’t enjoy the film as much anymore because I watched all of the trailers, and I was actively avoiding any further marketing. But really, the trailers did exactly what they were supposed to do. They made you think that you saw a huge chunk of the movie, but really just made you really want to see it.

I also loooooooved the writing. Superhero movies are supposed to be full of quippy one-liners, and that’s exactly what this movie has! I’m a huge supporter of the idea that the same person should both write the script and direct the movie and this film is pure evidence of that statement! James Gunn had a clear vision of what he wanted this movie to be and he was able to execute that vision.

Now, let’s talk about the antagonist for a bit. The main one was, of course, supposed to be Ego. Kurt Russel played him per-fec-tly! He was warm, fatherly and welcoming, as well as evil and intimidating. And James Gunn (or whoever had this idea) is a fuc*ing genius! Ego the Living Planet is just a wacky Silver Age character in the comics, but idea to make him this God-like creature, who created this planet and has immense power to do even more is just awesome!

I only have two real complaints about Ego. First of all, he was underused! People always say that the MCU’s biggest problem is their villains. This movie has a very strong villain, but he is the villain for only like a third of the film. I mean, sure, I can see what Gunn was doing here. He didn’t what the Ego plot-line to take over the movie. But they could have contained him in a Grant Ward style way, so that he could be further used in Infinity War, instead of killing him off. I also just didn’t really like the story in general. I’m not sure if there was even supposed to be a “story”. The movie is definitely character based and not story based.

My second worry was that Peter has superpowers. Don’t get me wrong, it was pretty awesome to see Star-Lord with, basically, Green Lantern powers. But, there’s always just something wrong when you see a character that typically doesn’t have actual powers with super abilities. I mean, yeah, according to Ego he no longer had them, but I’ve seen a theory circulating the internet that Ego just lied to stop Peter from killing him. Damn, I hope that theory isn’t true! Anyway, to be fair, they kind of had to give Peter powers so that he would form a bond with Ego and to explain why he isn’t dead along with all of Ego’s other kids (creepy), but I do feel like they could have come up with a slightly more interesting way of doing that.

I also wasn’t too fond of all the special effects. I understand that this movie had a really big budget anyway, but the CG was kinnda meh at times. And you could clearly see that 80% of the locations where green screens. This is one of the reasons why I’m really excited to see the Guardians in Infinity War, because we’ll be able to see them in more grounded locations like (one of) Stark’s living room(s). But, back to the special effect for a sec. I am happy they realized that they would have a limited special effects budget, so the money went where the effects really matter. Groot, for example, looks gosh damn incredible!

Since we’re on the criticisms, I might as well talk about the last real criticism that I had about this movie. And it is that Zoe Saldana’s acting was kind of inconsistent at times. It wasn’t necessarily bad, but she just kept shifting styles. I understand that they wanted her character to have gone through a transformation by the end of the film, but in the last film she was this ruthless assassin and in this one she was practically a full-on comic relief role. This is a bit weird to watch, considering that the movies are only supposed to take place a few months between each other.

Now, we need to talk about Yondu. I think it’s safe to say that Yondu is the first character in the MARVEL Cinematic Universe to have a complete arc from introduction to death. Michael Rooker nailed the role and he had an epic send-off. And before he died, they gave comic fans what they wanted… Yondu with his actual giant fin. I know that Yondu wasn’t the same character when he died as he was when we first met him, and Rooker portrayed that transformation perfectly. Man, I just hope that they don’t ruin what they did by bringing Yondu back any time soon.

Oh, and I just have to touch on that Stan Lee cameo! This is the single cameo that connects all of the other Stan Lee cameos in the MCU together. Damn, there’s even an idea that it might connect all the Stan Lee cameo’s ever, thus suggesting that Stan Lee can travel across the Multiverse. Also, this scene completely proves the theory that Scott from Nerdsync made a few years back. And it’s just so awesome to see the Watcher in a movie. I doubt that he is going to play a key part any time soon, but it was still great too see him.

As campy as a movie can be 0

Honestly disappointed, found myself scrolling through my phone due to sheer boredom while watching it. The movie makers decided to remove all the stops and bend the plot and action so that it fits their comedic narrative, for the most part it simply felt like a Power Rangers flick. ...
