That's Not A Moon....
The Story:
Brian Bendis and Mike Deodato bring us this Secret Wars mini series starring the Guardians of the Galaxy. Charged with protecting Nowhere in it's orbit around Planet Doom, they run into some familiar and some new faces.
The Good:
The art by Dedodato on this is his usual level of greatness. He is one of my all time favorites and does a fantastic job here. His battle scenes are simply phenomenal and this mini series has plenty of them to go around.
The action is this one is basically non-stop and we get a wide variety of battles between Drax and Angela, Gamora and Angela, Yotat (a new character) vs the Guardians as well as Yotat vs the Nova Corps. It's beautifully drawn and many of them end violently with casualties all around.
The main premise of the story is Angela (one of mom's vanguard) arresting Gamora for leaving her territory. Gamora's cosmic awareness has allowed her visions of things beyond the current reality and such blasphemy brings her into direct conflict with Angela.
Bendis also manages to make sure we get some cameos from some of the other Marvel cosmic characters we don't see very often and uses them pretty well. With a bit more time I would have liked to see the Nova Corps team in action a bit more.
The Bad:
I really feel like this mini would have been better served with a few more issues to work with. Bends manages to weave a nice story with the time he was given but a couple of more issues to flesh things out would have worked well.
Overall:
This is a fun mini with some outstanding art. It's definitely worth the cover price and as an added bonus you get the classic New Avengers: illuminati issue #3 where they confront the Beyonder.
