It is all about "Cash".
It is all about "Cash" and we are introduced to the "Grifter" who is set to start taking our cash. With Wildstorm now being part of the DCU, the Wildstorm characters are slowing making their way into the same universe of Superman and Batman. The issue to start the who 52 off was the Justice League of America issue where we see the world presented in a more "real" feel where we do not trust the metahumans and that is why this comic has that feel that is it a Wildstorm book over a DC book. Are are being slowing lead into the trick, because it will happen, one day Grifter will meet the DCU and this comic focuses on Cole Cash and his direct universe.
I think the best story of the 52 so far are Character driven, because they don't depend on the interlocking stories that might be planned and they don't get caught in plots that might not be good. I think Nathan Edmondson made the correct choice to focus on Cole Cash the Grifter. Most people to jump into the 52 will be doing so for the accessibility and the character driven books tend to be best because they allow accessibility.
My only concern was with the narrative and how jumpy I felt it was. It is not pace horribly, but it is paced in a way to distract as Edmonson metaphorically pick pockets our expectations. The quick introduction of Cole's Brother Max is very interesting, since Max Cash was one of my more favorite Alan Moore creations during his WildC.A.T.s run. T.A.O. being the only better creation.
Another thing that would of been nice is to see a Travis Charest cover. I knew he left WildC.A.T.s because of his inability to hit deadlines, but as a cover artist for something DC planned, I am sure they could of made it work. It would of been a nice treat for any comic fan to see new Charest Grifter art.
Overall I enjoyed this book, I feel it was accessible and it is being lead in the right direction.
Cheers
