The world has suffered a nuclear holocaust and the destruction of OPEC nations.  The world’s major power supply had been severely crippled, finally forcing the adaption of alternative sources ofenergy, the most successful being solar power.  In a world dependent on the sun, a mass exodus of the world population began, with most traveling toward the equator.  The United States became the United Californian Systems of America.  The east coast megatropolis became a ghost town in the wake of this human migration.

After several hundred years, the world began to once again take on a more civilized structure, but the rising world order was subject to a mix of opportunistic religion and self indulgence.  the struggle for control of a fading America is now happening in the churches, as much as the boardrooms and chemically altered minds of the public.  Drugs are big business, and corporations and racing to find just the right mix that will provide the most happiness with the least side effects.
