Green Lantern ( 2011 ) my opinion
General info
I have watched this movie for the first time in 2011, but not in a theatre. I was 12, and i did not really care about things that i wasn't REALLY interested in. So i asked for it for Christmas, as one of my many presents. I watched it the next night, and i really disliked it. And i haven't watched it again up until three days ago. Before that, even when Hal has became my favourite character a year earlier i haven't watched that movie because i was still left with a bad taste after watching it in 2011. Anyway, i watched it three days ago, then i watched it yesterday and today i'm watching it again. Because now, i do enjoy that movie. And let me explain why.
The Plot/Movie in general
Ok, let me start by saying that : this is not a really good movie. It's average at best. But i do enjoy watching it.
The plot is pretty easy. It's basicly a slightly changed "Emerald Dawn". Were instead of Legion we get Parallax, who is probably Hal's greatest enemy in comics ( maybe apart from Sinestro, right? ). The story is enjoyable though it's not really complicated ( A young pilot gets chosen to be a new member of a intergalactic police force, and when everything seems to be doomed he saves the day and becomes a real intergalactic hero ), which is good for the movie because even people unfamiliar with the Green Lantern comics can enjoy watching it.
The only thing i have a problem with in this movie, is the fact that Hal is saying each five minutes that he is scared and that he is not good enough to be a Green Lantern. I understand why the writer/writers did include that in the movie, but i think that he doesn't really have any reason to do so. They should think of a better reason for him to say that he is not good enough. Like, the first time he says that is when he was defeated by Sinestro in a training fight. Why would he say he is not good? Because he lost a fight? And the second time is when gets to know that Parallax is heading to his sector. Damn, i understand that he might be scared of fighting Parallax, but it's not like he knows already that the Corp won't help him! Maybe i did not understand something. But it just seems pretty forced in that story.
As a GL Corp fan i'd like them to use some more characters from the Corp, but i understand that it wouldn't be good for an origin movie. So i'm not really complaining.
Special Effects
The Special effects, though they are getting looking old now, are not so bad yet and it doesn't really disturb watching the movie. Maybe apart from the early scenes on Oa when he is waking up and talks to Tomar-Re in his initiation room...
Anyway, i find the idea to make the Green Lantern Suit computer generated really good. It's true that it's forged out of energy, so it couldn't be spandex. And the design of the suit is also really good. It fits well the movie.
I do like how the constructs look. Though, i'd like them to make some more imaginative constructs and have some better fighting scenes with them, i don't complain because of a quote from Hal Jordan himself "Oh, I'm sorry, did I disappoint you? I materialized a track out of pure energy, saving hundreds, and you're disappointed. I'm sorry about that!". The constructs do look good in general in there.
The portrayal of the Guardians in the movie looks really good. The look of the Guardians, with this form of gel over their heads, their dynamic ( what i mean by that their facial expressions ) look original and just fine. They look how i'd like them to look in a movie. I'm a little dissapointed in how the aliens look. Many of them look like just some bad CGI and fake.
Oa, looks just fine. Especially the Guardians's Thrones. What they did there in that movie with Oa is a really original take on the GL franchise, and the look ( though it's getting old by now ) is just fine.
Actors
I find the actor choices just perfect. It's the only thing this movie has that is perfect.
Ryan Reynolds, though he's not a really good actor is doing really great as Hal Jordan. I could even quote him : "This may be my dream role". It should be. He was born to play Hal and i'm dissapointed they did not make a sequel.
Blake Lively, well, she's in that movie mainly to look pretty. Juts like Carol Ferris is the comics ( apart from the part where she changes to Star Sapphire, but it's irrelevant here ). And she's doing her job rather well. The feministic part of comicvine may hate me for saying that. I don't care though. She is really pretty, prettier than most of the superheroes's girls in movies ( apart from Amy Adams and Natalie Portman ) and that's all she is for in that movie.
Mark Strong make a great Sinestro as well. I'd like them to make a sequel in order to show us more of him. As a villain this time.
Michael Clarke Duncan. It's almost unfair to list him anywhere, as he is nailing every movie he's in.
Geoffrey Rush was a good voice choice for both Tomar-Re and narrator.
Peter Saarsgard is always great. He didn't have much to act here though, as they covered him with like 15 pounds of plasticine or something in order to make him look like Hammond.
Verdict
I find this movie very good for a CBM. It does it's job well, as a origin movie. It's not supossed to me really serious or anything. It's a fun movie. And that's why i give it 4/5.
I also find it better that at least half of the trending Marvel movies. Come get me Marvel fanboys.
