A great collection of stories
Green Lantern: Secret 2814 is a book I recently decided to pick up (being a big GL fan). It looks great, especially given how grainy the original comics look (and I do own the original issues that this comic collects). It makes me think these comics were made in the 90’s.
Collecting issues 172-176 and 178-181, it tells the story of Hal Jordan’s return to earth after having been exiled for a year due to his carelessness. His reunion with his friends (Carol, Tom etc.), and what happens while he’s back on earth. Jason Bloch is still trying to get Ferris aircraft destroyed (which is what he’s been trying to do ever since Hal was on earth, so he hires The Javelin (a former athlete) and then the demolition team. Eventually Ferris Aircraft does actually gett destroyed and Carol gets furious at Hal for being there on time, resulting in him deciding to quit the corps for good. Additionally he takes on the Shark, and literally fights inside his subconscious. I always believed the Shark made a great villain for GL; he does feed on fear after all, and his appearance in this book made for a great read.
Len Wein’s writing is typical, he doesn’t seem to bring any memorable lines of dialogue, but the story is interested (particularly the part with the Shark). Dave Gibbons’ art is fantastic as ever, giving some characters new life in his art. I think it’s kind of funny reading his run on GLC, and learning that he had been involved with Green Lantern for decades now.
Also for those interested, this book does not collect any of the “Tales of the Corps” back up stories that the GL comics had around that time. Most of those have already been collected in trade, Tales of the Green Lantern Corps Vol 2.
In conclusion, Green Lantern: Sector 2814, makes for a great read. Can’t wait for Volume 2, which is when John Stewart took over as the main Green Lantern of Sector 2814
