Guy Has His Dr. Phil Moment.

War of the Green Lanterns nears its conclusion as Guy Gardner gets a big moment in this issue, which turns out to be effective but a bit underwhelming.

In the dramatic wake of the previous part's cliffhanger, the four Earth Lanterns reunite and set their sights on getting Parallax out of the Central Power Battery, and it comes down to Guy and Hal having to dual wield power rings to get the job done.

Something this issue makes clear is that John Stewart may not be quickly forgiven by anyone for the decision he just made, and that alone is a good indication that we could see a very different dynamic between the characters coming out of this crossover. However, John is so far the only character who seems to have been genuinely affected by this story, and that is a bit underwhelming. Guy gets his own big moment in this issue, but while it's a good moment for the story, it's impact on Guy going forward seems irrelevant.

Guy's moment here focuses on him having a major emotional revelation that allows him to fully use the two power rings he is wearing. Unfortunately, Pete Tomasi kind of drops the ball. It is a tough scene to pull off, so it's no great sin that Tomasi isn't really able to. His dialogue makes the moment much more campy than dramatic, and the actual substance of Guy's little revelation is pretty basic. There's nothing startling or special about it. The whole moment ends less with awe and more with the feeling of "...That's it?"

Then there is the matter of Hal and Guy dual-wielding power rings. Yes, it has been done before, but it doesn't really work well. Hal and Guy slip on second rings like it's nothing, and the simplicity of that really makes the whole idea fall flat. Maybe this will become more complicated in the next part of this crossover, but as it stands, it just comes off as a poorly thought out idea.

Emerald Warriors delivers a good ninth part to the War of the Green Lantern crossover but fumbles its big moment of the story a little. Other than that, Tomasi does a very good job at writing Guy Gardner as he usually does and keeps the momentum of the story moving strong.

On the eve of this crossover story arc which leads to the DC reboot, pretty much every thing is on the line here.  There is not much room left for taking the series in different directions and so with all the focus on the War of the Green Lanterns the penultimate chapter delivers here, at least it does in every way that it should.  In so doing though it doesn't really feel like any new ground is being broken with a lot of the same resolutions here as the reader has seen elsewhere in the crossove...
