The GLAAD Green Lantern
Judd Winick is known best for being the MTV Real World guy that became a full-time comicbook writer. One of the benefits of his time on the Real World was his relationship with Pedro, who he wrote a book called "Pedro and Me" as a tribute to his gay friend who died of AIDS.
Personally I don't love Judd Winick's writing, nor do I hate it. I see him as a one trick pony, a man who plays off the MTV fame. This is why a lot of his most acclaimed stories will deal with STDs and the gay community. During his time on the Green Lantern book, he would win the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) award a couple of times. This issue is one of those GLAAD awarding issues.
Kyle Rayner's assistant Terry Berg would come out being gay and this would create a situation much similar to what Judd Winick could of drawn as real-life experience. Kyle could of been him and Terry could of been Pedro, never me Judd, so I haven't asked him, but it would be interesting if this issue was set up so he could draw from real-life experience.
As a story is is pretty solid. It didn't blow be a way, but it is a nice example of why Kyle Rayner is my GL. Kyle is more humble then the at the time crazy Hal Jordan. Kyle is more the everyman from the Green Lanterns of earth. Guy would be the "Jock", John would be the minority, Hal was the cool as a cumber character and Kyle was the starving artist. I've always related best with Kyle and even dealing with close friends who come out, I've had to handle it the best I could.
For those who haven't been exposed enough of Kyle to know why he has a fan base, this is an issue to check out. It is collected in the 2010 DC Comics Presents: Green Lantern one-shot.
Cheers
