Hal vs Kalibak
Summary
The story picks up with Kyle helping Hal get reoriented with his "future". Hal has got the whole story of how he went crazy and killed everyone and destroyed the corps, tried to set Time right etc etc blah blah. John and Guy are both happy but terrified of his return especially with the prospect this Hal is younger than them and doesn't even know them. He opts to leave the guys in the lantern lounge to go somewhere he actually feels attached to.
A Ferris airfield Carol and another friend of Hal's reminisce about the good old days when Hal was around. Of course young Hal arrives and Carol throws her arms and lips around him. Young Hal is shocked as he hasn't developed that kind of relationship with Carol yet. After reminiscing Kalibak of apocalypse attacks and Hal eventually defeats him but vows revenge.
Hal then comes to the realization that since he's here he may as well make the best of it, him and his friends end the issue together.
End of Issue
The Good
The story was slow paced and gradually built to a general crescendo with the fight, cant have a Hal issue without a fight otherwise whats the point? lol. I enjoyed young Hal's interactions with Guy and John especially Guy who was about to beat him senseless just by looking at him, that's always been there relationship. Also liked Carol's reaction to Hal, married or not she has always loved Hal heart and soul and that shines through here. Hal's fight was just standard fare, Hal rarely loses to anyone so there was no real "fire" to it.
Compliments to Ron Marz on crafting a Hal story that avoided much of his standard Macho fare, I actually enjoyed the issue.
The Bad
The issue focused mostly on Hal......Kyle relegated to background.
Hal....not as entertaining as Kyle at all.
The Ugly
3/5 stars, ok read but nothing to get excited about
