Hornet Jr Grows Up in Smith's Hornet #3
I wasn't too impressed with the previous issue of this series, but I felt like the potential for fun that is evident with the Green Hornet warranted another try. I did enjoy this issue as it was well paced and moved the story along quite well, but I still feel like its lacking in the originality department. I can appreciate basic good guys and bad guys but there's always room to innovate in terms of presentation. This issue picks up where the last one ended, in the all too common fundraiser party crashed by our main antagonist whom I won't give away, but like the death in this issue, its on the cover. Well, one of them at least. The design for our villain, I thought was pretty cool. I reminded me, being a wrestling nerd and all, of Kane or The Demolition. We watch the OG Hornet suffer a Knightfall-like beatdown, minus the back breaker, plus the hot lead and from there we have our poor Hornet Jr, alone and full of regret.
From there we get our mourning period and follow him on his hunt for answers. Of course this leads to the interrogation turned bar fight we've seen in so many Steven Seagal flicks. The high point of this issue was the end when an mystery man comes in to help Britt prepare for his destiny. I picked up on the Yoda like smugness, but it didn't bother me to see it. I expect the momentum to stay high for the next issue. Probably in the form of a training sequence.
Overall, I found this to be entertaining, but nothing special. There was an improvement in the art this time around, particularly with the action sequences and the covers have been consistently good. What I feel this series is still missing is a fresh tone, so while I don't hate what Smith is doing, I'm not buying into the buzz (no pun intended) surrounding it. Worth picking up for Hornet fans, but everyone else can skip it or wait for the trade
