That would be quite the twist to make him a Green Lantern later in the series, and I would welcome it.
Green Arrow
Character » Green Arrow appears in 4303 issues.
Oliver Queen was a spoiled, thrill-seeking playboy, until he was left stranded on a deserted island for several years. There, he trained to become a master archer in order to survive. After his return home, he used his new-found skills and his wealth to became the costumed vigilante known as Green Arrow.
Given both of their military backgrounds and partnering with Green Arrow, do you think that John Diggle (from Arrow) is really John Stewart?
Interesting theory. But no. Not to me at least. First off, when was John ever an ally of Green Arrow other than in Justice League Unlimited? Even then, they rarely if ever had any interaction.
And why wouldn't they just call him John Stewart? It's that hard to call a guy Stewart instead of Diggle (then again, it's that hard to call Wonder Woman Diana instead or Iris?).
And even if he is Stewart, they're not making him GL. Lantern has way too big of a budget needed for a TV series.
No. And as much as I'd like to see John Stewart in a live action show.. Arrow needs to focus on building GA rogues/supporting characters. Deathstroke and Huntress are fine and all, but it's a show about GA. Throwing GL into it seems too much like it's trying to be a general DCU show.
I'd like to specify that I never said that he'd actually become Green Lantern... I just thought that it would be appropriate to subtly relate it to a significant part of Green Arrow's history, much like John Blake's 'Robin' name reveal in TDKR. It's worth noting the many obscure references in the show and other name changes (like Black Canary). Even if it were true, I don't expect anything more to come of this. I personally thought that the characters were a little too similar to ignore. Firstly, they look very similar, have the name 'John', have a military based background and are (indirectly) related to the history of the character. Much of the production team worked with the 'Green Lantern' film, so we know that they acknowledge the existence of the character, regardless of whether they are or are not integrating themes between the two.
I think he's just a character made for the show. I'm also pretty certain that his name is a reference to Andy Diggle who wrote Green Arrow Year 1.
With the introduction of The Flash rumored to be part of season 2, I wouldn't count out John being cast as a incarnation of Green Lantern. There are background similarities between the two characters and it'll be a great way to give him some much needed character development. Lets be honest he rarely does anything on the show. Ollies the hero, Roy's gearing up to be the sidekick, Felicity's the tech girl and Sara's the antihero. Diggle helps out where he can but has no specific role so I wouldn't have a problem with that scenario.
As much as I'd love to see Diggle get in on a little more action I think he's fine where he's at. That ideas just a tad bit out of left field for the gritty/realism take on Arrow.
@degraaf: doomsday didnt look "that" bad, but darkseid was horrible.
I highly doubt that Diggle is GL because in the show, they are taking a Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy feel with no superpowers. And GL would be an extremely hard character to pull off in this kind of universe.
Interesting theory but not likely to occur.
And yet they're introducing Black Canary this season. Not to mention there's a strong rumor going around that Barry Allen might appear some time down the road.
@black_claw: Black Canary hasn't got powers in Arrow.
Interesting, but other than the military background I don't see much John Stewart in Dig. And they just introduced Dig as a character in the comics, so I think they're intended to be separate.
There's more than enough room for multiple named black male DC characters with US military backgrounds.

They are introducing the flash later on in the series but they changed the Black Canary a little. She now carries around little disks the size of a hockey puck that emits the super sonic sound instead of her voice. But a GL ring is all science and tech anyways so it should still fit in slightly if done right
