Oliver Queen fights for justice, by day as a columnist for the Daily Star, by night as the Green Arrow. Two street toughs hold up a grocery store clerk. Before they can murder him, they are stopped by the Green Arrow. The Green Arrow activates an alarm, to signal for the police, before departing. At his home, the Green Arrow, as Queen, is accosted by Deidra Wagner, a lawyer. Queen is given a summons to appear at the reading of Abigail Horton's last will and testament.

The scent of Horton's perfume, on the document, draws Queen's mind to his past. Queen's relationship with Horton had generated great speculation in the society columns. Though Queen shared a deep friendship with the elder Horton, it was her daughter, Cynthia, who Queen romantically courted. Unlike the mother, however, the daughter shared few of Queen's interests. That disparity drove them apart. To forget Cynthia, Queen booked passage on a luxury liner, one that was hijacked by pirates.

Queen was thrown overboard, washing up ashore on a deserted island. Queen taught himself archery, along with various other survival skills. When the pirates arrived on the island, to hide their ill-gotten goods, Queen easily dispatched them, using his newfound archery skills. Returning to the states, Queen, a changed man, embarked on a career as a masked vigilante, the Green Arrow. As the Green Arrow, Queen fought crime alongside his sidekick, Speedy.

During the course of his adventures as the Green Arrow, Queen's neglect of his company cost him his fortune. Horton offered Queen to seed him capital to start anew, but Queen refused. Queen found life all the sweeter for having lost his fortune. Queen forged a lifelong friendship with the Green Lantern, and found love with the Black Canary. Queen stirs from his reverie, and bids Wagner good night. Queen's appearance, at the reading of Horton's will, surprises Cynthia.

Queen is introduced to Cynthia's husband, Lord Gerrold Sinclair. The executer of the will, a Mister Thorndyke, seated next to an urn of Horton's ashes, reads the will. Horton's son, Theodore, Jr., daughter, Cynthia, and brother, Maxwell Stein, each receive several million dollars. Queen, shockingly, is awarded the bulk of the estate, along with controlling interest in Horton Chemicals. Horton's family is outraged. Wagner, however, assures them that the will is legitimate, and does convey Horton's true last wishes.

Queen has no interest in the money, but accepts that Horton didn't want it to go to her, clearly, ungrateful family. En route home, Queen discusses the situation with his girlfriend, Dinah Drake Lance. Before he can enter his apartment, an explosion destroys it. Queen pursues the bomber, as the Green Arrow. The Green Arrow easily apprehends the bomber, who is more than eager to talk, to avoid a severe beating. Before the bomber can reveal any information, a remote signal incinerates him.

Realizing that he has been targeted due to Horton's inheritance, the Green Arrow, as Queen, decides to accept it. The next morning, Queen establishes himself as the head of Horton Chemicals.

    Notes:
