Why you should be reading Gotham City Sirens...

I'll frame my review of this issue/series thus far with a simple statement:

    I don't like Poison Ivy.

Now, with that being said, as you can see on the cover of this issue it's a very Ivy-centric issue dealing with her feelings towards humanity, Gotham, and the other two Sirens in general, and I've got to say I loved it.

The reason the Ivy character never really appeals to  me is that her obession over plants vs. humans and the explanations that were given, while plausible in a comic book, didn't stike any chords personally with me, maybe I'm just not green-minded enough or something.  In this issue Andreyko takes the normal Ivy motivations and really does some fleshing out work and got me into the character more than I've been before, even in this series.

Gone is the soley plant hearted/minded Ivy, instead you see that her friendships and time with Sirens has given her a new perspective and she's really trying to maintain the relationships that have given her back a piece of herself that she assumed was gone.  The scenes in Arkham with Harley were particularly enlightening as to why someone who has been protrayed as Ivy has in the past would even bother with helping the Sirens let alone the population of Gotham.

While the ending was predictable this issue was about the journey that got you there.

Andreyko took Gotham City Sirens to darker places than it normally goes with Dini at the helm, don't get me wrong, there's still the trademark humor that has made this book a bit of a cult success, but this was by far one of the darkest, if not the darkest, of the series thus far.

We also got a glance at wonderfully characterized Eddie Nigma again, who is rumored to become far more involved in this book in the near future.

The Art by Guillem March was fantastic as usual, I assume that he as a character crush on all three of the star characters as he renders them beautifully, inserts tiny details into the back ground, and works wonderful facial expressions onto every page.

Gotham City Sirens is one of those great books that has everything going for it, beautifly eye popping art, wonderful characterizations of the main characters that adds more and more depth and exploration each issue that comes out, literal laugh out loud moments, great action scenes, and a incredibly well crafted story and surrounding world.

If you're a fan of Catwoman, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, or Eddie Nigma and you're not reading this book you are really and truly missing out on one of the best kept secrets in comics right now.

If you're a fan of a book that is something different set within a known world that is a just plain fun read each and every issue, please consider giving this book a try, you won't be sorry, not one bit.
