Ajax was mortal, unless Marvel have made him into a God.

Perhaps it's Hephaestus/Vulcan?  Perhaps the hammer is what he uses to forge Zeus' lightning bolts?

So i'm guessing because Achilles is on the Olympic God team doesn't make him a god? but Ajax isn't even listed on the team.... Still looks like a mean bastard.

Could be, but Achilles is also there and he's no god either. So i'm still thinking it's Ajax.

Ajax was mortal born of two mortal parents.  Achilles' mother was Thetis, so he was a mortal but with divine heritage.
If anyone in Greek mythology goes around wielding a giant hammer, it's Hephaestus.

The Ares mini by MIchael Avon Oeming. It's a great read, and Ares isn't a complete mongoloid mouth-breather like he became when Bendis got his filthy hands on the character. Ajax is actually mentioned by name on the splash page this scan is derived from.

You're right of course, unless you're talking about Ajax the lesser. But i doubt they look at mythology so closely in the Marvel Universe, just look at several Olympians in the Marvel universe. Ajax is known amongst the greater public as wielding a huge hammer (most notably from the movie Troy).

Side note: many characters depicted there are not gods. Theseus, Jason and the Argonauts, Perseus, and "too many Earthbound heroes to mention".

True, and I do suspect that Marvel will have warped the character to suit their own needs.  However, Ajax wielded a giant spear, ignoring any rubbish spewed from that dreadful movie.  If it is Ajax (which I still doubt) then he's had a much needed make-over...

I'd say more of a Marvel background, although an actual understanding of Greek mythology is displayed, it is also obviously customized. I love Greek mythology, and Marvel comics, so naturally I loved it. Oeming is also a great writer.

If you read it for the mythology i wouldn't pick it up. Your knowledge of it won't be needed in that comic, but i still found it to be a good read though but not if you go into it expecting lots of mythology :p

He used different weapons, but yes he did have a giant shield and it was Ajax the Greater... I thought Ajax the lesser was a bitch?   But he did use a hammer once or twice, but mainly a giant spear...... Personally i think the massive hammer is more intimidating than any spear.

Here's the creative team on the Ares mini.

Precise's scan seems to be pretty accurate.  Seems to settle the matter, and I'll admit that it does look like the big bald axe/hammer guy is referred to as Ajax.

Sorry, Korg.  You may have said it, but words didn't prove it.  I wasn't convinced till Precise proved it with the scan.  So anyways, I'm just saying I was wrong.

Also: Yes, if you had just one image it could be taken out of context.  For instance, if it was just the panel with Ajax in it, then it wouldn't prove that it was Ajax... it would just be a bald guy with big muscles & a massive warhammer.  However, since that's the whole page and you see Hercules actually addressing him as 'Ajax' then I would (and did) say that is 'accurate'.

You were right though, he's nothing like the Ajax described in Greek mythology, he fits your description better. The only way i knew it was him was because he looks exactly like the guy from the movie Troy. And that's how he's known by the majority of the people.

So, how is the Olympus comic?

Have Marvel &/or DC ever put out a comic using their designs/versions of the various mythologies & legends? What are some of the better comics to actually tell the myths, as closly as possible. I hate to say it, but if I'm going to read the myths, I'd kinda like some cool pictures to go with it.
