Mace Gardner was born to Roland and Peggy Gardner in Baltimore, Maryland. His drunken father was always particularly proud of Mace, but he was also considerably abusive to both his mother and his younger brother, Guy.

After breaking several records in college football, Mace became a policeman in his home town and ended up setting his brother Guy straight after he ended up on the wrong side of the law.

Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse for Mace when he was dealing with a drug trafficker and ended up being shot and paralyzed from the waist down. Depressed with no way out in sight, Mace tried to commit suicide by drowning himself in a river. This ended up driving his father's alcoholism to a whole new level, and ultimately killed him.

As it turned out however, Mace had survived his suicide attempt and was recruited by the corrupt organization known as Quorum. They enhanced him with cybernetics and made him into the mercenary known as Militia.

As Militia, Mace has ended up operating on both sides of the law and has often come to oppose his brother Guy.
