The comic world was saddened today by news of the passing of Gene Colan, who worked for both Marvel and DC during the Silver Age of Comics. Colan entered into a "quasi coma state" after complications due to liver disease and a fall had broken his hip. He was 84.

    No Caption Provided

Colan worked Marvel's predecessor, Timely Comics, as well as the company proper. He drew Marvel heroes such as Iron Man and Daredevil during the 1960's, and was the artist for the full 70 issue run of The Tomb of Dracula. Colan also provided art for the satire series Howard the Duck. He also co-created The Falcon.

    No Caption Provided

Colan also worked for DC comics during the 1980's, on Detective Comics, Wonder Woman, Batman, The Legion of Super-Heroes and many other titles.

“Gene Colan was like no other artist of his generation. His ability to create dramatic, multi-valued tonal illustrations using straight India ink and board was unparalleled," said Jim Lee, comic artist and co-publisher of DC Comics. "The comics industry has lost one of its true visionaries today.”

Our own Tony "G-Man" Guererro shot a video back in 2009 while on a visit to the The San Francisco Cartoon Art Museum in to view an exhibit of Colan's work. Check it out if you'd like to see a great selection of Colan's work, including some very iconic covers.

Tomb of Dracula was a crazy book, made all the crazier by Colan's super experimental (for the time) art style. He shall be missed, but his work shall live on and hopefully inspire future artists.

    Rest In Peace, Mr. Colan.
You are a real inspiration to many comic artists. This is just saddening. I think we shall just removed comments in this type of news.

Gene Colan was a fantastic artist, way ahead of his time in my opinion. His work on Daredevil is some of the best stuff of the silver age.

Sad to hear that he passed away. If anyone that likes Daredevil hasn't read his run -- it's a whopping 80-something issues -- I'd highly recommend that they do so.

So sorry to hear this news.  Gene Colan's Tomb of Dracula was always the definitive Dracula for me, even compared to film and novels.  His art was amazing and distinctive for the time, especially when inked by Tom Palmer.  And of course, his Namor in Tales to Astonish and The Sub-Mariner were some of my favorite renditions.  Thank you Gene Colan for sharing your talent on some of my favorite books and characters.  RIP and condolences to his family.

Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote  “The definition of success--To laugh much; to win respect of intelligent persons and the affections of children; to earn the approbation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to give one's self; to leave the world a little better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition.; to have played and laughed with enthusiasm, and sung with exultation; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived--this is to have succeeded." Gene Colan was truly successful and most definitely help make the world a little better place through all his work
