Proper Japanese Title: 現代コミック
Gendai Comic was a short-lived and obscure manga magazine (relative to the prominence of its creative line-up) released by Futabasha. At the time Futabasha were helping establish the early forms of seinen manga with Weekly Manga Action but this magazine was seemingly entirely separated from that aside from some crossover talent. Released twice a month, it lasted for nine issues and featured a variety of one-shots or short serializations from numerous notable authors but it's unclear if it was intended to last much longer. The pool of talent it pulled from indicates a mix of Garo, Big Comic and Manga Action along with a few others not traditionally associated with any of those magazines.
The brand name Gendai Comic was more famously used by Futabasha for a series of twelve collections from 1969-1970. Each of these reprinted various short works by a major creator in the industry at the time and used the same un-illustrated book design and just the author's name as the title of the book. Some of these authors also appeared in this magazine (Shigeru Mizuki, Osamu Tezuka, Takao Saito, Hiroshi Hirata, Yoshiharu Tsuge, Shotaro Ishinmori, Goseki Kojima, Shinji Nagashima) while others did not (Sanpei Shirato, Kazuo Umezu, Monkey Punch). Other major authors appeared in the magazine but did not get a collection (Mitsuteru Yokoyama).
