Nice to see someone mentioned on this thread who isn't from the x-kiddy books. (I have nothing against the teen x-books, it's just that there are so many underutilized older characters as well.)
Iceman Storm Gambit Beast return him from Avengers Charles, after schism, make him have more of active role in the team. Maybe lead X-Men team again Jean Grey, when returns, have her play more if role in the teams. She be gone too long.
As an original X-Men I would say Iceman is the most underrated over the years. I am sick of writers saying they don't use him much because his power's are too hard to write. I say BS to that. While she has ridden high in the past Storm is currently underrated. She is a strong with character with incredible powers, control of the weather itself. How cool is that. The problem with Storm is not that she is now married to T'Challa, in fact I think the marriage was a good idea. Problem is that it took her out of the regular X-Men activities/apperances, so she was out of the loop, thus not getting as much attention from writers diminishing the amount of time writers spend on her.

So wrong. Just because she's not as frequently written doesn't mean she's underrated. Iceman is both infrequently written and underrated, however.

John maybe you should read the question probley. Who the most underrated X-Men characters that need to be in the spotlight more often. First of all it doesn't means terms of power, otherwise it will be clearly stated. These characters who are underated, that need to be in spolight more. Storm is underated, cause she not used enough, she has less voice in the comics. She has lead three team in past, has a lot experience and is powerful and she has less voice than Emma Frost. I am not the only who agrees that storm should be in the spolight. Jean Grey underated, cause she han't been in X-Men for years.. Just some poor replacements for her in Hope and Rachel Grey.

I'll try and read it "probley" next time, oh, wait, I did. Your point about Jean, even along the lines you're now trying to argue, is still completely invalid. Storm has one of the most rabid and zealous fanbases of any character ever, hardly underrated in the sense of being under-appreciated. Moreover, within the fiction itself, she's a loved and well-respected veteran X-Man. Within the last year, since the end of Second Coming, she's been used more, especially in X-Men Vol. 3, where she even led her own team. She's constantly used in the field and used to a greater extent than many other X-characters, even characters who have stood by the X-Men more in the last decade than her.
How does any of this make her underrated? She's lead a team of X-Men for more than twenty years. That's like 2/3 of the time she's been featured in X-titles. "She has less voice than Emma Frost ", a pretty false claim, because at the end of the day all decisions currently rest with Scott, as you constantly say, don't they? Storm, along with Emma, is currently on Scott's panel of advisors. Pretty good for someone who pissed off to Africa and abandoned her family before and during Decimation.

Yes! Yes! and Yes! I mean, who else in the Marvel universe had the combined powers of Galactus and Phoenix (though only briefly)? And how many characters liberated Hell?

All of these are agreeable. I'll throw Dead Girl in their but I always will until I have more of course! I'm also going to say Dazzler doesn't get nearly the appreciation currently she deserves, and the little background shots of her don't count for spit either. No, it doesn't mean that I couldn't understand what he's saying, I'm just disagreeing.

Not who were a few years back. My point is that Storm shouldn't suddenly go back to her former glory having not been present in X-Books for such a long time. How could she be underrated with very little to rate her by? It's not as though she's done anything massively defining to rate her by since she's been married to T'Challa. By that logic, Kitty had been vastly overrated for the two years she was missing.
Time is complaining that up to a year ago, she wasn't being used enough. She views being underrated and underused as the same thing.
She's used more than most mutants, specifically X-Men on Utopia - true. Only maybe Scott, Wolverine, Emma, Colossus, Magneto, Angel, Namor, X-23, X-Club etc have been used more recently. Certainly more than Iceman, Dazzler, Northstar, Warpath, most New Mutants, New X-Men…..
EDIT: In Uncanny and X-Men she's had her own team within the last six months. She's constantly used by Scott in his tactics, she's on his board of advisors.

Forge dead? I seen him around in recent comics. Mimic is quiet powerful in Exiles, just not 616
Mimic has always been more of a villain than an X-Man. He is like Magneto in that regard. For that matter, isn't Cordelia Frost a villain, too?
I'd say the most under-rated X-Men are:
Iceman (who never uses more than a fraction of his full power) Colossus (I don't think his full power has been on display more than a handful of times, and his secondary powers are almost always forgotten) Shadowcat (rarely shown to be as good as established with any skill or power; wonder if this is why they are recycling story lines with her) Dazzler (very powerful energy projector, and important character who is marginalized and written out) Magik (one day they will allow her to tap into her full potential outside of Limbo) Sunspot & Moonstar (both seem to lose some power when they start using other aspects) Warlock (frightening if you really think about his upper limits)
Colossus (I don't think his full power has been on display more than a handful of times, and his secondary powers are almost always forgotten)
A really well thought out list. What are Peter's secondary powers, exactly?
Colossus has a few powers we rarely see. The main one is an immunity/high resistance to magic. Another point often forgotten is that he generates energy when he shifts form. Colossus used to use the fact he was composed of metal to advantage against foes with weaknesses to metal, or as a living conductor. I can't think of the last time any such trick was performed.
We also rarely see him take advantage of the fact that he requires little or no oxygen while in his metal form; Colossus can effectively operate in any environment including the vacuum of space. Most writers fail to use even his strength to the same advantage that Hulk, Thing, or Hercules do; by displaying a variety of super-strength tricks like shockwaves.
